Just watched a fascinating documentary on a chap who was born with a birth mark on his face.

From the age of 14 this birth mark grew and developed into a Tumour. Growing up with his Mother and Father he became withdrawn from society. His Mother was a Jehovah's Witness and wouldn't allow him to have medical surgery - due to a blood transfusion.

He used to look in the mirror and his Mum would stand behind him, pulling silly faces, so he would believe it was normal.

He is now 54, living by himself in Lisbon. His sister is his prime carer. The Tumour has grown over his left eye, mouth and nostril and breathing is becoming a problem.

He has finally faced up to his problem and is receiving treatment in London - hopefully they will be able to remove most of it off. As he isn't prepared to have a blood transfusion, Doctors can't fulfil the entire operation, meaning he won't be able to show any emotion....smiling, frowning etc..

Just thought I'd share that one with you.

His Mother was a Joseph Witness Charlie, I think you mean 'Jehovah's Witness'

I assume you mean a Jehova's witness, Charlie.

A sad story.

Yes yes...I do. :o

It is sad - I was annoyed the program didn't you show you what he looks like now!

I'm trying to search the web...no joy!

It's very difficult to understand. The sister isn't religious but at one point in the program the only chance of survival was an operation that involved a blood transfer.

He denied it. "It's not what my mother would of wanted." :(

Charlie, I deleted the post which you quoted, as I didn't word it how I inteded to.

What I meant to say was that to someone like me who is not very religious, someone who puts religion before their own life is not normal.

Before this thread goes off down a particular road, can I just remind people:-

20. Political discussion not directly related to Disco & karaoke issues are prohibited, as are religious debates.

That's his choice which has to be respected. I does seem a tragic situation to me though given that had he been born into a different faith his life could have been so different! :(

I've loked after a couple of people who have died when a transfusion would probably have saved their life. Very sad, but as Tony says, you have to respect the decision.

I suppose it stands out the more because of the usual high quality of posts to which we have become accustomed, from you.

Yes. I'm a part-time nurse, and now I'm at medical school full time training to be a doctor.
