With or Without?

Do you prefer to gig alone or with someone else?


Both have there pro's and con's, I do prefer to work with someone else but like the money to much to work on my own :)


What are your thoughts?

Mostly always on my own 98%.

If not the person has a role so no girlfriends looking bored in the corner.

I cant focus when i have someone else so that person has to be a certain type if that makes sense. Basically someone who knows what they are doing and does not distract me.

Thats for a wedding or something more difficult though. if it was an 18th or a mates event then its OK.

I've been doing 90% with my wife...shes lovely, love her to bits...but - when it comes to music her song suggestions can be "questionable" - but you married guys know how difficult it is - so it can lead to a lengthy silence if I'm not diplomatic !! :innocent: :Naughty:

From a financial point of view, I prefer working on my own, like I have for the last 18 years, as I don't have to split the money. I can also make decisions on my own.

However, for my first 8 years running mobiles, I did so with a friend, and preferred this due to having the extra person to help carry in & set up the gear, someone else to do half the night while I chilled out & someone to chat to throughout the function.

almost always my partner comes with me, she helps out with setting up, choosing music etc. Also helpfull to have her there to deal with requests etc.

My ex wife never came with me, we spent lots of time apart, we're divorced now.

I prefer having somebody with me, which Tay (fortunately for him ;)) comes to my gigs now. He's really helpful, which is a great hand when having to setup really quickly. :)

Nice to have someone to chat to during the quiet parts of the evening, but once the evening gets going, the other person doesn't have a role and tends to get bored, so a bit of both really.

worked 99% of the time on my own. I dont like to take a roadie unless they are going to be doing something during the gig such as take videos or photos which is a extra I try to sell to 18/21st but not weddings. Reason being is for weddings I think it should be first class and I cant really give them to them.

It varies. When Tay agreed to come out and help me, it was on the understanding of no pay and to just have a good time, as I put all money back into my business anyway. Plus, with the amount I charge, it wouldn't be possible to pay Tay a large chunk of the money. However, when possible I slip Tay a bit of cash.

I always felt OBLIGED to pay folk whenever they worked for me. Often it would be in the excess of £35/40!

Since I have taken the "business" more seriously...I don't have anybody working for me.

I hate someone being with me, my mate on the other hand is always trying to coax someone into going with him as he hates being on his own. I do however employ a roadie who takes me, sets up with me and picks me up when I finish. He does 1 or 2 local bands too so it's all good, especially if you have a drink.

I take my godson out at the moment and we really have a good time.....we bounce off each other.....customer's look and laugh, they often come up, comment or take pictures of us to remind them of the good time they had :o ....might be whishful thinking. :D :D :D :D
He's off to be a plumber after summer holidays.....I think i'll lose him then. :(

ATR [Adam Taylor & Tom Rogers] is run by us both and we regularly attend gigs together when we can. All depends on uni commitments and the type of gig. Our agency contact only likes one of us working for the gigs he gives us but apart from that there is generally two of us behind the decks.

Great to bounce ideas off each other... Load in / out + set up time is greatly reduced and general banter with guests is easier as one of you can conecentrate on the guests and the other on the music / lighting.

Obviousloy it does eat into the profits with two DJ's but we enjoy djing and as we're both at uni it is not our sole income or anything, we just take on gigs when we can.

I nearly always take a roadie with me now but I didn't for years... I find we have a real laugh and it relaxes me a bit which I've noticed improves my DJing. I pay my roadie £25 + kebab + diet coke.

It's good to have someone to watch my back at the kebab shop after the gig too... can get a bit messy mixing it with all the drunks!! :D :D

When I used to do Gigs years ago I always took someone with me due to the amount and weight of the gear, especially all those records and light boxes....lol

I used to have a mate that came along to all of my gigs, he used to do most of the driving as he had a van for his business, we used bounce of each other and we really worked well together, I used to pull the records off the decks and throw them to him and he would slip them back in the sleeves, a bit like the film cocktail........lol

Unfortunately he met a girl from up north and moved away, I tried using a few other people as Roadies but it never seemed to work out well as there just wasnt the same interaction between us as I had with my old mate Terry!

I think that if I do finally decide to go back on the road it would either be just me on my own or sometimes the wife might come along it really depends on the gig really!

Up here, in the wilderness, two things spring to mind.
1) I pass very few, if any Kebeb shops on the way home.
2) None of said kebab houses are ever open.
3) Even if they were open, I'm not spending all my profit on a takeaway.
