View Full Version : Ash Cloud

Hi all,
As I'm sure you are aware, the ash cloud is still looming, and according to the geezer from Met Office that was on BBC News this morning, it WILL stay airbourne until the volcano stops errupting. They think it'll be about a week until it stops
Now, I know a lot of you are planning on going to Benidorm, so I hope it's all sorted by then for you, but my best friend is stuck in Singapore, and won't be home for atleast another week :( That's the earliest too, as there is the risk of a) the current volcano continuing to errupt into next week and b) the chance of the larger volcano next to it errupting as well
I hope this sorts itself out soon! Don't be surprised if you find ash on your cars either, apparently that's another joy we can look forward to!

It's a bit unfortunate I know, but I think most people are to be compensated by the airlines aren't they? It's bad luck, but no-one's fault.
I am a bit taken aback by some of the comments from those that have been affected. They need to stand back and put things into perspective - they are alive and well, merely inconvenienced. They should consider themselves fortunate enough that they can afford to go on holiday!
Last time it erupted it went on for 2 years! That's true, it could be, and could still be, a lot worse.

Some friends of the family are stuck out somewhere or other and there insurance didnt cover 'Acts of God'.That's what I'd have thought too, but apparently some airlines are compensating nonetheless, as it was reported that this is going to cost the industry a very large sum..

But some insurance companies are treating it as bad weather and will pay out.

I'd be insisting that they proved that God existed before accepting their claim rejection...

Ever seen the film the man who sued god. Love that movie but basically its all about the insurance industry claiming acts of god to prevent paying out. So he asked them to prove it.

it depends where the cloud goes as to reference to us going to benidom as we are flying straight down south. If the wind direction takes it more east rather than south we might be in luck. Girl I know was meant to be going to new york but not happeaning not gutted for her though. Not sure how the airlines are going to afford this.

i was down in south wales tues - thurs, was meant to fly back on thursday evening. Ended up having to drive back in a hire car with my girlfriend and my very bored 9 year old daughter.
9 hours in a car isnt fun but i had to get back for the weekend gigs.

I'm delighted the way the Airlines are behaving......
No travel is worth endangering life.....It must be a torrid time for them as well as the passengers!!!
two hours ////two days/////two weeks////two years////Its not important how long it lasts.No-one should set a foot on an aircraft until we're absolutely sure its safe!!

I've got friends stuck in Cyprus, and me & Nic are due to fly to Tenerife for 5 days tomorrow at 2.30pm. Doubt it very much that we'll end up going, there is a review due at 9 tonight but can't see the situation miraculously rectifying itself.
Right off to get showered for tonights wedding that I haven't got high hopes for - bridezilla from hell up until this point!
Update - Just this second received a text from Monarch Airlines saying our flight is cancelled - right, now I'm off to tonights gig! :( :( :(

Luckly, no. It was hired from Europcar at Cardiff airport, i returned it to their depot at Edinburgh airport. I got charged an extra £22 for a 'one way' hire.

Quick update:
British Airways flew a Boeing 747 (Jumbo Jet) on a test flight yesterday and have reported that there were no problems whatsoever.
However, several NATO F-16 Fighter Jets suffered engine damage whilst on a flight yesterday.
It is also reported that Airlines like BA are losing approximately £1million per hour!

Just to clarify for anyone that has been affected:
“Insurers are responding to a significantly increased volume of calls and customers should be aware they may have to wait longer than usual. Priority will be always given to those with health emergencies.
Calls that are meant for airlines or tour operators are being redirected as appropriate.
“For single-trip policies, all insurers will automatically extend the period of cover for those who are currently stranded abroad. This is typically up to a period of one month. For those who are still in the UK and have rearranged travel plans the policyholder can have their policy amended at any time before the new departure date and should contact their insurance provider to arrange this.
“While a volcanic eruption is not a specific insured event covered in insurance policies, some cover for delay and travel abandonment may be available, depending on the level of cover purchased by the policyholder and the terms and conditions. This will vary as there is no standard travel insurance policy. Payment for delay, whether outward or return, is usually a fixed amount per delayed period up to a maximum figure, not an open-ended sum.
“It is especially important to talk to your insurer to determine the types of expenses which can be covered before you incur them.
“It is an urban myth that insurers are relying on an “Act of God” clause to get out of providing cover for this event. Where this event is not specifically covered by your insurer some are offering ex-gratia payments for customers stranded abroad.
“For any traveller including those who have a journey approaching and are due to travel to or from a UK airport the first thing you should do is contact your airline or the airport you are travelling from to find out the latest information regarding your travel arrangements.”
