Is It Worth It?

I've seen a few DJ's on here mention they offer dance floors as an optional extra, so my question is aimed at anyone who actually has one.

Is it worth it and what made you invest in one in the first place?

Every venue I have so far worked in has had a dance floor, so to my way of thinking it's not something guests would expect to hire from the DJ and because they have hired a venue they would expect the venue to include a dance floor.

I also can't imagine the set-up times involved, not to mention the unloading after a gig, isn't it horrendous?

People don't expect to hire from the DJ. It's a separate service for me.

Marquees don't come with dance floors and most venues only have parquet. Lots of people want different colours and materials. Starlit are popular as are pure black and pure white.

I have separate people doing the floors and a 12x12 oak can only take about 30 minutes.

The Party that i am doing on Saturday is in a Marquee and the client is having a wooden floor covering the whole marquee and also a black and white dance floor, so that must be nice little job for someone.

Its difficult with the dance floors, you need to be doing it properly and on a large scale to be making serious money out of it.

As most of you know I have invested in the starlit dance floors, 24ft x 24ft in each colour. These are going out on hire at £525 a day+ depending on the size.

On the face of it that sounds really good but it is misleading when you consider:


* It has cost me approx £25k to buy the floors and accesories and £5k on a new van which is large enough to transport them around.

*The starlit floors have a life expectancy of approx 3 years before they will need to be replaced due to them being too scractched to go out on hire.

*There is also the issue of storage to consider

*Staff costs to set them up

*Cleaning the floors - especially the white ones


Unless you are going to go all out and make dance floors almost a seperate business you are better off hiring in the floors from someone like me :) , making some commision and letting the dance floor company do the work.

That surprises me Darren.I always thought it was latched into the booking for a Function.

I also didn't consider the wear and tear and maintenance of them either Ben.

I've learnt something....

I've learnt something too, no way am I getting into it and if the function doesn't have a dance floor or the customer asks about me providing one I'll be pointing them in the direction of someone (ideally from here) else.

We go everywhere, Glasgow is the furthest north and Plymouth the furthest south this year so far! :)
