After taking a 3 year break from the disco scene, tonight is my first gig!

I can tell you I have mixed feelings of excitement and being rather nervous. Looking forward to it though as I get to test out all my new gear.

Hopefull all will go well for my return ...

See most of you tomorrow at the AGM NADJ show.

Good luck.

I remember what it was like, the first gig after a long layoff. I was very nervous before hand but as soon as I started the nerves disappeared and I really enjoyed it. :)

Hope all wen't according to plan last night!
It's only natural to be nervous before a show!
It's far better to be nervous than to be over-confident ;)

Hey thanks for all your great comments.

I actually feel quite deflated and very exhausted, it was hard work. I have new cd's and I coped quite well, however the maximum I had dancing was 3.

It was a 40th Birthday and was in a small pub with two rooms (both with bars) and most of the guests were outside all night. I tryed playing absolutely everything right from the 60s up to the present day and a good 30 minute stint of Mo-Town No 1s.

Nothing I did worked and I felt awful :(

The worst part was (not sure if I was being a little over paranoid) the lady who's birthday it was obviously had her husband there and he was talking with one of his work mates. This work mate of his was slating me at the end of the night to his mate, saying that I was feeling bad about no one being on the dance floor - which was true - but then saying it was my fault basically.

He even had the nerve to say can I play some mo-town and I said I did. Oh he said "I thought they were rubbish! (diana ross, lionel richie, stevie wonder, jackson 5, micheal jackson etc)

The worst part was I could hear the husband saying he's not a very good DJ :(

That has to be the worst thing anyone could ever say!

I mean ok we all get bad comments from silly people now and again but when I DJed before 95% of my feedback was really good.

I asked the Birthday lady (I know her) and said whilst packing away, was it ok? And I told her I felt awful and she said honestly it was a good night.

Obviously here husband and mate didn't think so ...

Should I just give up now???????????

:( :( :( :(

No!

Whatever you do - don't give up.

Sounds like you played some smashing tunes but they were just a hard crowd. It's been a delightful day and night so they were probably enjoying the music whilst drinking and chatting outside.

I wouldn't let one small minded drunken man put you off your work.

You'll have some great gigs and some not so great. You'll meet some lovely people one night and then some complete tossers the next.

It's the way it goes. Stay strong, focused and you'll be fine.

I'm sure the next gig will go better. :approve:

I think it was the night for pants gigs.

I've just got in from doing a 21st for a mates brother - he was expecting over 100 people...there was about 60-70 people of which only 20% had any interest in dancing!

It was hard to read the crowd as they wanted such different music from each other, some wanted chart, some wanted rock, some wanted 80's etc and I only managed to get people on the dance floor in dribs & drabs.

The birthday boy, his Dad and (I think it was) his Nan shook my hand and said thanks for a great night and the Dad expressed an interest in booking me for his anniversary.

I felt a bit deflated, but after those three came up to me and said that, I feel a bit better.

Sorry to hear your are a bit fed up ... I think everyone has had gigs with very few dancers, I know I have!

As long as you tried abit of everything and played their requests, if there were any, then I can't see what more you could do really. I work on the rule that if I am mixing it up and they say nothing then they must be happy.

The 2 guys at the bar, well they were probably a bit drunk and fall into the 'play something good' mentality.

Its easy to people to criticize. Sometimes they even think they can do better ... Because all it is, "playing a few records"

very few people realise the effort that goes into a disco.

Go to bed, get some sleep and tomorrow reflect on what you did right and perhaps where you could have done better and strive to improve those areas.

We've all had gigs where it didn't go as well as anticipated. Don't let it get you down, just put all your focus into your next gig.

you learn and improve alot more when things dont go your way rather than nights that you do.

If your serious about a long term carear in djing though you'll have to learn not to take things so personal but at the same time learning about areas for improve.

Chin up :D

The first three gigs I did after my "break" were very average. But number 4 was amazing and the first three faded into the past. Keep your chin up, take something (anything) positive you can from this experience and move forward. :beer1:

So the guy that was slating you made no attemp to dance then, just one of those people who likes to stand back and watch and then slate people off.
Don't worry, i bet you next gig will be fine.:)

And I'd say he wasn’t a very good husband to blame you instead of getting his backside into gear and making it more of a party for his wife.
