Choreographed first dances

I have been having a browse of a wedding forum and came across a thread about organised first dances - the kind of thing you see on Youtube etc

One member said she thought that they have been 'done to death' but I don't think they have.

Have you DJ'd at a wedding where they've done this?

I can probably count on one hand how many couples have over the last 20 odd years.

Yup! I have had a Bride & Groom do the whole of the Grease Megamix :eek: :eek: :D

I did another Wedding where there was a choreographed first dance but I can't remember what :o :)

Short time ago, bride and groom spent weeks learning all the moves to ' Time of my life' from Dirty Dancing. Appropiate outfits with a lift at the end which had to be carefully measured due to low ceiling light with a distinct lack of lighting from my side in case it blinded either of them.

However it went down an absolute storm, and was the start of a great night.

Despite specialising in Barn Dance Weddings have seen 2 or 3 in the last 5 years.

Often ( as you know) these people pay tuition fees to get up to speed.

I think its a very personal thing and will continue.

So yes I agree with you, mind you some of the airheads on those forums dont have a clue anyway.

Some people on here go to a Wedding every week ( I used to) these contributors go to one or two in a lifetime;)

I had the bloke i was teaching DJing show me his wedding dance the other day. i have too say its different and entertaining but not for me though.

answering your question never seen it done. I think the person did not want too conform too the hype.

Yes. I had a bride and groom request this last year for their wedding first dance. They asked could I mix a few of their selected songs together and send them a CD for them to practice the dance moves. They sent me some youtube links beforehand to see what they were trying to create/achieve. The links were from American weddings but I had a search and found some from the UK too.

They asked me to start with Westlife's "The Way You Look Tonight" and then mix into "Everybody Dance Now" followed by Time Warp, Cotton Eye Joe and a few others I can't remember now. They asked to finish with Backstreet Boys' "Everybody".

I was quite intrigued to see how this would work on the night and it went pretty good as it got the crowd going as none of them were expecting the bride and groom to move from the traditional 'slow' first dance into a medley of songs and dances. The bride did pretty good but the groom wasn't as much into it/didn't take it too serious but he did ok.

I think if this is going to be done at a wedding it's got to be done properly and be well rehearsed, make sure it is kept as a surprise and make sure that you are relatively sober when it is done.

Overall it went ok but unfortunately they were upstaged by two of their guests that night - the best man and his son who did a very good dance routine in the form of a 'dance off' to Michale Jackson's Billie Jean. They asked to do this on the night and it had not been rehearsed but I was pretty impressed.
