QTX CP-12 (Skytec) active speakers

Anyone heard or used these before?

I need a couple of pairs of cheap powered speakers for background music and for vocal applications in December and don't want to spend the earth.

These look OK once the badges are taken off ( gear snob alert over...) :D

Can't help thinking there must be something budget range but better but then that's not a lot of money for a pair of powered speakers are they going to be reliable enough ?

I had a pair of skytec powered speakers for a long time. Cant remember the model, and they were great, not the highest spl in the world, but done the job nicely.

Not really the way it reads to me, gave me more of the opinion that you would buy them unless someone slated them I was just giving you my feelings about them IMHO although I don't have any personal experience of them. :)

I have the 200w version and has done very nicely for speeches and background music, but will admit I haven't used for disco. AVSL's problem is, they keep "updating" the model's, so every few months it's something different.

they'll be fine - we used similar spec with smaller woofers for home hire - karaoke, music, singing and they were fine. No problems at all and damn good value. They tend to run out of steam very quickly towards the top end but for background music - ideal.

Looked after, they'll even Ebay at a half decent price too

I haven't heard these particular Skytec cabinets, but the Carlsbro gammas look much better (have heard those) and they're £5.00 cheaper

The problem is Angela is there aren't many decent pairs of speakers for that price, and there is NEVER harm in suggesting alternative solutions. I have bought a cheap ish pro audio system, and it needs a heck of a lot of EQing to sound decent, and it happens to also be branded Skytec.

Let's say a certain pair of speakers didn't even come close to sounding acceptable, and we all reccomended a DJ to buy them, and he/she bought them, we would not be doing them any favours, would we. ;)

Daz, Disco World is out of stock of both of the 12in and 15in models.

I've seen them used in karaoke applications before but never for disco. They sound ok for the price, though.

out of interest, why do you want active boxes for background use? This will mean running signal and mains around, rather than just one speaker cable.

If ive missed something, and active is the order of the day, take a look at the w-audio PSR-8A's, very well engineered small boxes, miles ahead of any skytec product ive seen

I already have a pair of those and I'm not sure they are going to be loud enough for this application. Powered is a lot easier if I just want to add more speakers on and not worry about impedance. I am also using wireless transmitters, so again, powered is easier.

If the PSR8-A is not man enough, then perhaps look at the 12" version if budget allows. Like its little brother, it is well engineered and well supported by Prolight, with spares and servicing available in the UK.

no reason at all, but those being on ch70 are licence free which is handy, particularly with the messy frequency changes comming up

I've only used it 3 or 4 times and it was pretty good indoors.

I bought it for an outside gig - a commentry and it struggled a little, but only 'cos it was going through 3 or 4 walls.

I don't need them until December truth be told, but they are so cheap on Ebay which is why I thought I might grab a pair.

Well, the budget has been upped as another venue has confirmed 20+ bookings in December and I need another pair of actives to use with the LDWats2 syatem to save cabling. So, I've bought a pair of LD systems 12" actives for just over £350. If the quality is OK, I'll be buying another set.

Well, they are OK for the money.

I tested then firstly with a line directly from my laptop - they have plenty of inputs and could be used for P.A. hire and putting Ipods and mics directly into them. They have a bass boost type thing, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference to be honest. When the bass control was turned up, they distorted fairly easily, so I kept the eq flat on the back of the cab.

One thing I noticed was that are very very middy and needed eq-ing right down to take the harshness away. Having said that, if you are using them with a sub on high pass out, they might be OK.

I plugged my Pioneer mixer in and noticed a jump in quality, but these are no-where near to the quality of RCF, Mackie or EV, but then they are in a different price group.

As I have used RCF, Mackie and EV for a long time, the LD systems seem to run out of power very quickly and turning them up too far made them distort fairly quickly too, but they are only just over 200w RMS - didn't check the efficiency (sorry Tony A1 :D )

Overall, not a bad sounding speaker and I reckon used with a sub, could be a good budget sound and set up. I bought them for background music to use with the LDWats wireless system for Xmas and they should be fine for that.

I'd certainly recommend one for a cheap backup if you use active cabs or even if you don't.

Sorry to bring back an old topic, but I bought a pair of the skytec speakers in the OP. I could not get any from the suppier mentioned as they are still out of stock.

They are for a project I am working on for the christmas period. However, last night I had a wedding in a small room for 45 people so though I would try them out.

Impressions are they are not bad and certainly good value for the price. If you are a gear snob they are no good as have a QTX badge on the front of each speaker :D :D

Sound wise they are not bad at all for a 12" cab, I would actually like to hear a pair of 15" ones as would be good for backup.

When first fired up they sounded quite 'muffled' and dissapointing. After about a half hour warm up they did sound a lot better, not much bass and as you would expect not overly loud.

One thing I did notice was these are the only speakers I own where I can get 'Mr Brightside' to sound ok. (I never seem to get the sound right on this track for some strange reason).

Another bonus with them is they are relatively light and easy to handle, even though they do 'weld' themselves to the speaker stands :(

Overall for a budget active speaker they are a good buy, not tested side by side with anything, but managed last night no problem at all.

I think you will find the CP 12 is a discontinued model. I have a number of the QTX QS12's which I have used at outsid events over the last coupleof weeks with no real complaint at all. 250w unit with 2x mic inputs, 1x Line in and 1x line out, master level, treble and bass. Do ya wanna buy some :)
