Am I being a Donut?

Hi all,

Feel free to take the mick. I wasn't going to mention this but thought I would anyway just to see if I am right.

On Saturday I had my busiest day of the year so far with 3 functions on and a hire aswell. I had 2 DJ's out doing 40th birthdays which went well and the hire went well aswell.

I was doing a large wedding at a very nice venue I had been to a number of times before. Anyway, I set everything up where I had done on previous occasions (was there last year) and then something happened which peeved me off slightly.

Firstly, I turned the amp on to do a soundcheck (Crown XLS802) and it powered on and then went off straight away. When I pressed the power button there was nothing there, no power....nothing. I started to panic as I was worried about it. I had backup in the van (a new Cerwin Vega 2800) but was concerned about the Crown. I changed the kettle lead to it, pressed the power button again and all was well. Turned it off, turned it on again and still no problems. I couldn't work out what the problem was at the time but then realised that I was using the kettle lead for the NJD Starcloth.

Am I right in thinking that the kettle lead for the Starcloth wouldn't be powerful enough to power the amp? I'm no sparky but that's my thinking. I was going to try it again today but I have been busy doing my website so will try it again with that lead and another one tomorrow but any advice would be cool. Feel free to call me a Donut!

Gary, it is likely the IEC320 cordset for the Starcloth had a 3a fuse in the plugtop, which may be insufficient to support the startup current drawn by the amplifier. This would result in the fuse blowing.

I would say the chances are you blew the fuse in the kettle lead? I've done it beefore... I now mark the fuse rating on all my pat testing labels so I know which lead is ok for which piece of equipment. And before someone adds why not make them all 13amp fuses... not a clever idea. ;-)

Probably blown a fuse. I have done similar in the past. Some amps I have need a 13amp fuse to cope with the surge when they are plugged in. Use a cable with a 3 or 5 amp fuse and it will just blow it. I now clearly mark all cables to show what fuse they have in the plug by putting a ring of different coloured insulating tape round the cable near the plug.

I did notice that on the kettle lead (IEC lead) for the Starcloth, it said 5 amp on the plug.

I used to have the same problems years ago and ended up putting small coloured stickers (Dots) on the plugs to represent the fuse ratings

E.G
Red dot 3 amp
Yellow dot 5 amp
Green dot 13 amp

I got a label maker and labelled each plug for each item and my backup leads too. simples! I had been worried I might do something like that.

Welcome back you must have reappeared whilst I was on Holiday:D

Why wouldnt you always use the same lead supplied by the manufacturer with each piece of equipment that was supplied with the correct fuse:confused:

I have specific leads for the Peavey Amp, the Mixers, Hard drives etc and always use them with the appropriate equipment---

Must admit I have never managed to blow any fuse on any equipment I have used over the years, were talking big numbers here;) .

Hang on you know what it could be--cable fatigue--- that happened to my Hard drive set up=kettle lead failed due to constant winding up and general use--that can get picked up on PAT--had to bin what I thought were perfectly good leads on the last PAT test.

I think the quality of kettle leads ( waits for Tony to say IEC) is not what it used to be.:eek:

It certainly isnt, from being a pat tester myself, the number of cheap chinese cables that fail the polarity test is shocking.
