Vectis has mentioned the use of a UPS can someone explain in laymans term what their purpose is / what they do etc and recommend a suitable one.

Fundamentally, in the event of a power failure, they continue to provide your attached appliances with power for a limited time, allowing you to safely power down to avoid damaging your equipment, or possibly correcting the problem (someone flicked the switch at the wall outlet?), resulting in no interruption at all.

Anything by APC, the Denon of the UPS world :)

For example, something like this would be ideal for a playout system

Look at two things - the rating and the runtime. Runtimes are usually quoted against full load at the rated value.

Add up the maximums for the gear you want to protect - in my case a d2, equaliser and mixer comes to well under the 550VA of this unit, therefore my runtime would be about 10 minutes.

Any recomendations?Well, it's strange because I bought one from Ebuyer a couple of years back, and it seems to have disappeared from their site. The other thing is that if you want one powerful enough to handle your PA as well as your playout system, you're going to have to fork out a bit more. Mine is only connected to my playout system.

They are mainly used on Servers in the IT Dept of businesses. In the event of a power failure they are designed to provide about 12-15mins of power (depending on the load) to allow equipment to be safely switched off before any data is lost.
Belkin and APC provide affordable retail versions that are portable. They can cost anything from £40 - £70 for a standard one. I use them on my HDDs when DJing. They only last for about 4 years before the battery needs replacing.
They are definitely worth the having.

A UPS to power your entire system including amps & lighting would probably be way too big, heavy & expensive to be practical.

However, I use a small UPS on my console to protect my D2 in case of power failure.

It was only about £30 on ebay.

In addition to providing standby power, the UPS will smooth under- and over-voltage conditions, which is no bad thing for sensitive electronic equipment.
