Trailer Aerodynamics?

Hi i have used Darrens old trailer for a few years now:

as you can see the front is pretty much flat leading to quite allot of wind resistance and increasing fuel consumption.

I was at a DJ's house the other day and he has built a triangle type thing on the front effectively cutting the wind in half and distributing it round the trailer. He built this himself out of plywood and UPVC.

I was wondering if anyone knows of ahy ready made solutions for this?

Its a standard type of trailer so there must be something?

Your best first port of call would be to either visit the makers website or telephone them to see if they either make a replacement front panel nose cone (for want of a better description). They are generally made from fibreglass moulds, if they do them. It might, depending on the cost, save you a lot of time and hassle than trying to make a custombuilt one, as it would be in one piece and you would only have to weather seal 4 edges rather than quite a few, on a homemade one.:eek:

Mine, already had one fitted, when I bought it, you can also use it as extra storage space, for those lighter pieces of equipment that you don't often use. You can also get a bracket to fix your spare wheel on to it, so that, when needed, it's readily available.

Thanks for that! I will ring them tomorrow. There is a trailer place near me as southampton is quite big on its maritime stuff i must beable to find something.

I just feel that if i make something for it, it will fall apart down the M3 or something!

When I owned the trailer, I didn't have that problem as the car I used was as tall as the trailer.

I'm sure it's a good idea and should help with fuel consumption too.,

Yea, I have a low level impreza wagon.

There is no problem with stability, but i can definitely feel the drag which probably puts the MPG down allot. Must be 15 MPG? which is not cheap :eek: My gear is minimal and does not weigh too much when compared to some rigs out there.

A diesel van may be on the cards LOL. Is hire purchase worth it? im out every week.

15 mpg is a joke with fuel costs at an all time high.

I get just under 40 miles to the gallon.

I'm getting around 55mpg in my new VW caddy... and it drives better than my Golf!! :)

I was merely agreeing with Tony that he should get a van to reduce his weekly fuel bill (by nearly two thirds, which would probably save him a four figure sum each year).

That would save me lots of money each year I do 25 mpg without towing anything! I do love my car though as its the dog mobile too. V useful.

how much does it cost to run a van. im not driving that all the time :p The whole point of a trailer was to cut down on mot etc. but looking at it its costing me more in fuel using the Subaru to tow. Before is was not too much of an issue but now im busier its costing allot more!

My trailer is really aerodynamic. I bought the BV64e for £1200 new in 2008. I recommend a jocky wheel to go with it as I knackered my back trying to pull it to the back of a venue once. Full details here:

It is big enough for my 4 x SRM450s, a 5u mixing desk, 2 x revo IIIs, 4 x ADJ XScan LEDs and 4 x KAM lightstrips. I have measured it and believe I will be able to get in 2 x SRM1801s with 2 x SRM450s instead of 4 x SRM450s.

You only fit it when you need it, it depends on how easily a roof bar attaches to your car, most new ones just clip in and out as and when you need them.

That said even if it takes you ten minutes to fit each time, its probably 10 mins well spent as it will save you a lot of fuel

The whole point of getting a trailer was to cut time. It takes five mins loading all my stuff in to my car.
It all fits i did it today. :p I would rather do that and sell the trailer. thanks anyway :)

i have led lighting, 1 digital amp and small 10 inch speakers.
bins & flight case most heavy.

The suspension has not been lowered etc. should be fine. :)

Probably weights the same as my two dogs girlfriend and one passenger.

I think a nose cone is the answer for now. the shape of my car really diverts the air on to the back as its four wheel drive sports so needs it.

Thats the problem as it hits the trailer. Just needs to be diverted better.
