Hello Guys,

I have just recievied a booking for a birthday party on the 26th July 2010 at Chartridge Conference Centre and they have 600 guests attending the event.

I was wondering weather anyone had a PA System avaliable to hire or know anyone that has a PA System to hire capable for covering 600 guests in a marquee?

I have had a couple of quotes from different companies and before I make a decision on which one I want to choose, I wondered anyone on here had a system or know anyone who has got a system.

Please could you let me know ASAP as I am having a meeting with a client this weekend about the event?

Cheers,

Tom

Being in buckingham I would try phoenix soundworx in Northamptonshire. He does line array hire quite cheaply. Or are you looking for an installed system?

I'm wondering where in Chartridge Conference Centre they have space for a marquee that will hold that many people.

LOL at that...

yes, so did I, after looking at their inventory.

"Line Array" is one of the most misunderstood and misquoted terms within pro audio of recent years, not assisted by low level manufacturers marketing boxes as "line array" when they are clearly not.

To do LA properly, you not only need the right boxes (and lots of them), you also need a venue with suitable height and adequately rated loadbearing points and suitably qualified riggers and PLI that covers flown gear at the heights concerned.

Most of the entry level LA attempts I read about are no better than stacking 6 skytechs, peaveys (or any other similar nasty cabinet) on top of each other and yelling "whoppy doo, they're in a line... listen to my comb filtering extravaganza, oops, no, I mean look at my line array!!"

However, some of the nice medium size line array boxes (Q1 for example) can be groundstacked on top of subs or on stage on a frame, to take advantage of their narrow vertical dispertion in multiples to ramp up the MHF SPL of a FOH system. However applications where this solution works are limited, as you need some distance between the boxes and the closest audience, which in a "proper" LA configuration comes courtesy of the height. A cluster of 3xQ1s (which isn't line array) will do 145dB at 1m, which even with 10-15dB headroom on the desk, would be irresponsible if people can get "that" close to the stacks.

I'd be delighted to talk with you about your requirements, we have systems suitable for 50 to 15,000 people available!

PM on its way..

Surprised you say that I have seen his inventory and know he has db 40 line 50 line as well as the rcf line arrays in stock. For up to 1000 people they would cover perfectly.

Fair enough, I only went by what I saw during a brief look at the website

TT's sweet. Not a db technologies fan myself, but hey, sound is personal.

Depending on a number of criteria as outlined in my earlier post. LA isn't the best solution in so many applications, and I very much doubt it would be the best solution in the OP's temporary marquee, as it is highly unlikely neither the height nor rigging facilities would exist. Point & shoot is so much easier to deploy and sounds ten times better than a line array with a hang too short or too low.

Not all line array systems are created so "inflexible" though..

turbosound flexarray is one example, as is our Void arcline system which, when a smaller system is required becomes a point source system with 120 deg. horisontal and 24 degrees vertical coverage, and its own integrated rigging system that takes the tops as high as you need them:http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii196/csgal14tp/arclineissues003.jpg

Agreed re. the medium size boxes - what you've done there with Arcline is similar to what I was discussing about Q in post #8

quite so, and providing you take account of the fact that the sound level will decay following the inverse square law ( 6db / doubling distance) rather than the 3db / doubling distance that a true line source will exibit, a smaller system like this will provide smooth and consistant coverage from a compact system.
Naturally, as you have stated you should be carefull of max. spl with stacks near to ears, but the same applies to arrayed point source systems. Common sense and sticking to responsible limits solves these problems.

If I'm being brutally honest, I think Tom is lying. :o

Why would someone holding a huge birthday party for 600 guests have a (no disrespect, I am too) budget DJ host their event?

They have paid thousands on a venue that holds 600 people...I wouldn't like to imagine what the food or champagne on arrival bill is like.

Surely they would be hiring someone like Visual DJ's?

When I asked Tom on Facebook, I didn't receive a reply - just a notification saying he's deleted me.

I hate to be a spoil sport....

I've just rang the conference centre and they don't have any bookings for a Marquee for 600 people on Monday the 26th July 2010.

Nor do they cater for 600 people in a Marquee.

:o

so someone is having a birthday party on a monday for 600 people and they are all getting that time off work?

Isnt this the same Tom as AllStarVisual something or other too?

Yes & we've been through all that in the other thread(s)

Charlie, not being funny mate but I think actually going out of your way to phone a venue to check whether someone is lying or not is a bit over the top and most definitely below you.

If you had your own thoughts on it then stick with them. I'm sure you're correct but I just don't agree with phoning to check.

I gotta disargee Shakermaker if someone is appearing to be wasting peoples time and a quick phone call to the venue tells you he is then I dont see the issue.

I don't see it like that mate. Ok, so a few lines of 'porkies' on a forum gets people doubting the bloke....fair enough but the comments should be throwaway comments and not taken seriously. If the majority of people on here initially thought that the bloke was lying then that should have been the end of it.

Maybe I am being too critical but I just don't see the need for actually phoning up to check. If someone was wasting MY time with an enquiry that looked a bit suspect then I would check with the venue etc....That's not meant to sound hypocritical, I just see it different to actually wasting my time personally and stringing a few people along on an internet forum when it has reportedly been done before by the OP.

It's only curiosity Gary, not a lot different from conveniently passing a venue and having a quick look in to see who's doing a gig that should have been yours ? ;) :)

No doubt the forum owners will take whatever action they feel appropriate, if any, on this latest 'exposure' , taking into consideration any history of misrepresentaion and it's potential effects on other forum members and the reputation of the industry ?

Either way a 'pinch of salt' would appear to be the necessary prescription for any further exaggerations ;)

Actually, you're correct but as I said at the time, I was at the garage nextdoor anyway.

You're not by any means alone, I've certainly seemed to be 'by chance' in the right place to gain info...... and can't think why I was there ;) ..... on many occasions !! :D

Pointing no fingers at anyone with this, but it's amazing how many times facts come to light without any digging whatsoever on your part. It's happened to me before. ;)

Like the fact that unless they level some of the landscaped gardens there is no way a marquee that would hold 600 would fit at Chartridge you mean?

I just stuck this in another thread but:
For 600 people you will need a 40 x 120 foot marquee (12 x 36m)
For 600 people seated you will need 50 x 140 foot marquee (15 x 42m)

In this case, nothing of that sort at all Steve. Like I said, pointing no fingers. ;) Merely remarking that often the answers to questions I had about customers and work/bookings/residencies have fallen into my lap in casual conversations.

And I once worked in a marquee erected over a multi level landscaped garden. Interesting, but feasible.
