crown xls 802 and crossover

ive just bought a crown xls 802 brand new and a behringer super-x cx3400...

i have a crown xls 602 and mackie 215 and class d 15" subs

just wondering how any of use would set this up
as iv never used a crossover before i just connected
the mackies to subs then to amp

just to clear up - you have mackie twin 15" main speakers and class d 15" subs?

If so, id recommend the following:

Mixer > Berry crossover > Crown xls602 > class d 15" subs

Mixer > crown xls802 > mackie 215

The second line being run from the mixer from a second master output, or if your mixer does not have one, then :

Mixer > crown xls802 > ( parralel input link outs) Berry crossover > crown xls602 > bass bins

with the mackies being run from the xls802 as before

Before people pipe up, and state that both amps and speaker sets should be run from the crossover, well, the unusual thing with your system is that your main speakers are larger and will have more bottom end than your subs ( unless im missing something here?)
thats why i am advocating using the larger amp for the mackies, and running them full range to boot.

This will have the advantage of using all the power and response of your amps and speakers, and also simplifiying things when you dont need your subs on smaller jobs - just dont bring them, nothing will need adjusting.

Perhaps if you can let us know exactly what subs you are using, then i might be able to refine my advice

as to crossover frequency settings - start with a low pass of 120Hz

The Mackie S215 isn't a twin 15". It is a single 15" with a tweeter that only goes down to 55hz.

The OP should connect the crossover to the mixer, Use the 602 with the Mackie tops and 802 for the bass bins (bass uses more power than tops). Start at a crossover frequency of 120hz and then adjust for the best sound. It would also be an improvement in sound if you could disconnect the the crossover in the bass bins.

Around 4 weeks ago I purchased a Cerwin Vega 2800 and a Behringer Super X Crossover. I have them both in one case and the Crown XLS802 in another one...(may get one large case for the lot when I have time).

I have it set up as follows:

XLR balanced from Mixer to Behringer.
Crown XLS802 to Behringer (High) to JBL's
Cerwin Vega 2800 Behringer (Low) to Bass Bins

Unsurprisingly, Tony is bang on with his advice. On what I can see online, should be a reasonable rig.

His advice about disconnecting the internal crossover is good, if you intend to always use the subs with the CX.

If you've ever set up a pair of tops out of Class D subs, it sounds fine- until you power it down, and add the active crossover, and second amp. The difference is staggering. ;) I did it at a gig where I had loads of time to spare. When I set it up without the external crossover, I thought I'd wasted my money on it, cos it sounded fine. :( :( When I added it in, I realised I hadn't. :D :D :D

Well, i guess i should have done more homework!

On the basis of this information, then the above advice is good. You may like to play around with the crossover point a little, and my advice of using the 802 on the mid highs may actually give a more balanced sound, but this very much depends on the efficiencies of the different cabs.

Bypassing the passive crossovers in the bass bins is also worthwhile, as they will be lossy and will absorb a certain amount of the power being fed into the cab.
bear in mind though, this may invalidate any warranty you have on the subs!

been playing about with crossover
in the instructions it say just plug xlr cable into 1 of the inputs then to mixer
do i need to get split xlr cables female to 2 male so i can get both speakers working right as the other input on the crossover says ( not used)

and sorry how do i go about bypassing the built in crossover in the subs
