Health and safety acts and rules I need to follow??

Hi all

I'm the process of starting up a mobile lighting business providing professional lighting to DJs, wedding, bands, social clubs and functions.
I will setup, de-gig and operate the lighting as well.

I'm in need of some help

What healthy and safety acts and rules I need to follow for my lighting business??

Any help, advice will be most appreciated!!

Welcome David,

Aside from HASAWA, you should pay particular attention to any exclusions and stipulations contained within your PLI policy. Whilst these vary from insurer to insurer, you can expect to find stipulations on working at heights, rigging and leaving rigged equipment unattended.

Gaining an NRC may be beneficial to your activities, depending on the scale of your operation (see the PLASA site for details)

COSHH will come into play if you are including pyro within your portfolio.

Ensure you have a robust generic risk assessment/method statement in place to cover all aspects of 'typical' jobs. Then carry out site visits as required where venue specific RAs are required, normally to cover off unloading, access & egress.

Comply with EAW regulations and familiarise yourself with BS7909:2008.

Ensure you are fully insured and safe before even you even think about hanging a Mac.

There seems to be qiute a lot to read on the follow.
Remember that this is a small home based lighting business which is more gearing to the mobile djs, social clubs and wedding.
I don't think working at heights will an issus.
COSHH would this include a martin smoke machine?? If not then there's no need for this act for my business to follow by.

So the main and most important health and safety rules and acts should I follow are HASAWA 1974 and the EAW regulations ??

A very important factor of Health and Safety is PAT Testing, a lot of originations e.g. coucils etc will require that you comply to the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) and The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (1998).
The best way to do this is to arrange for periodic inspection and testing of all your electrical equipment.
