Probably not the best description , however...

Ultramixer pro software , denon HC 4500.

At last nights gig , the first "deck " would have a song loaded , but when it came to play , it just repeated the first few millie seconds ,until I faded to deck two , which behaved all night, It was a bit like the bit in praise you by fat boy slim , at the same time the "link" light on the first deck on the 4500 would flash randomly , I changed the USB lead to no avail . later that evening the problem disappeared as fast as it started  , any ideas .

cheers

I had a problem like that (briefly) with my HD2500, defragging the HD heped for a while. After I swapped to a HD with a higher spin rate & bigger buffer, I never experienced it again.

Thanks Steve.

I run of a laptop , the HD is from a WD passport portable drive (160gb) , can you upgrade the drive on a laptop ?
the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L300 11c.

Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T2370- Genuine Windows® Vista® Home Premium Edition- DVD Super Multi (Double Layer) drive- 2,048 (1,024 + 1,024) MB DDR2 RAM (667 MHz)- 15.4 " 1,280 x 800 Toshiba TruBrite® WXGA TFT High Brightness display
This one has XP loaded , with all the correct drivers , the 4500 has the latest drivers as well

I can see the problem, if its an external drive on a usb port then the hc4500 is also linked by a usb port there is a possible usb bottleneck going on.

no , its me not explaining it properly :D :D

the only drive is the internal drive on the laptop , I swapped it because the original drive had a sector error , the only items connected to the laptop are the 4500 and a corded USB mouse.

Worked for me. It is suprising how much quicker they worked as well.

could be the drive you replaced it with is of a low buffer spec and also spin speed i.e 4200 rpm and not 5400 or 7200 but most laptops use 4200 or 5400 depends on spec and ages.

I also suspect that defrag may help.

I would normally de frag , but in this case , the drive had a low level format , the XP was installed (ntfs) , all this was last week  , would it need a de frag already ?

Is that using a Cortex HDC1000 Chris?

Just checked the drive specs.

Both drives:

5400rpm
2mb cache
160gb
SATA

A 2mb cache is very small, most are 8mb or above. Are there any background programs running?

That's what I was thinking. My no trouble externals are 7200rpm 8mb
