.........let's hear your reasons.

Bit of fun but most of us want to be more successful with our business so what is the main stumbling block/s preventing you from 'being at the top' ??

Studying for a degree!! Will be finished in 2012 so shall see how it goes... Also I currently can't drive! So thats another issue.... Got a lot at the moment to be honest. But we are successfull enough for the resources we have!

Age, knowledge, capital, experience.

I think people can try to be "successful" but more often than not, people fall into success - sometimes without expecting it!

I'd love to be successful - like everyone else. I fear my love for the job will obstruct me from trying new things and moving on.

I'm looking at buying a car, importing it over and selling it on. Doubt it will work - but who knows.

Two things first I want to sell my jewellery business so I've got time to do more gigs and spend more time on getting them and keeping everything in order equipment music etc.

Second a partner who takes what I do seriously and maybe helps me out a bit occasionally and also who doesn't offer my services free to her friends and falls out with me when I say I can't do that

only being one of me :(

Funnily enough, if I was giving a serious answer, that's also what I'd have said.

For the majority of disco bookings I take, I have to turn down another one for the same date...due to the fact that there's only one of me.

However, there are several reasons why I'd never go down the route of taking on a second DJ (even though it would nearly double my disco turnover), so I'll continue turning down these bookings & recommending a couple of my friends.

Yup - I'm seriously peed off with the amount of work I cannot do because I'm already booked, and have been on a total downer over this for the last few weeks. I also feel I'm letting people down in a way because I can't DJ for them, especially when they want me personally :( :( :( :(

2 reasons for me:

1: My girlfriend - having been too busy to spend time with my old girlfriends I now take more weekends off and keep work to office hours in an attempt to see her more

2: Not enough hours in the day, I have a massive list of stuff to do which is always being updated!

Day job and until I can considering my djing income more secure it wont change.

It also depends how you measure success? If its turnover/profit then its something I need to work on but if its entertaining the masses and generally doing a good job then not so much.

Hmmm good question... five reasons i suppose, (alot i know)

1. Family, with having two young children i tend try and spend as much time with them as i can.

2. Money (the route of all evil as my grandmother kept saying to me), finances are quite stiff due to having my young children and also relying on business to support everything (money wise)

3. Partner, tend to spend alot of time with my partner as we should hopefully be getting married soon (no dates set yet though ;))

4. My health, ive recently been really ill and got told due to stress that i have now got a condition called behcet's syndrome which sounds very worrying but its due to excessive amounts of stress but you cant see it which i suppose is a plus side.

5. Driving, as im unable to drive untill i re-sit my test im sort of limited but have many friends willing to help so i can 99.9% of bookings :)

Cheers Dave :)

P.s. sorry about the long reply lol

Lack of cash to invest more into the marketing side of things to to attract more potential customers

Me is Day job, training and socialising.

Day Job: As lot of members have said the income is not enough to pack in regular day job

Training: As I keen on constantly developing myself I like to spend a lot of time training

Socialising: This one of the key things for me as lot of friends are free weekends not in the week. So I try and balance it out.

Surely there's a very strong link between the two?

If you're great at entertaining the masses & doing a good job, more people will ask for cards or recommend you, which will lead to more work...and therefore more turnover & profit.

Good topic!

Mainly, I'm held back by:

(1) Time & Family commitments - in terms of time and requirement to keep stablility of my day-job.

(2) I'm fat and I fell out the ugly tree - I'm sure the more prolific events singers out there (ie my competition) fare well because they're easy on the eye as well as ear. Have in fact read bridal forum evidence to support this theory. Oh - and their websites are great too - hence.....

(3) I'm lazy with marketing and rubbish at website design.

Ooh this is an interesting one.

1. I could never make enough from DJ'ing to give up the day job, so I am limited in the time I can spend developing it.

2. Marketing. Web site is on its way, but even without it enquiries have started jumping. Word of mouth is spreading.

Thats about it really. Hoping the web site will move us on a bit.

Theres plenty of DJs round here. Just none of them that i would willingly put out to work under my name. And as for pub DJs;, theres a growing trend that "you (illegally) download the top 40 regulary, and can be a dj" often for £20 a night, and because takings havent particulary slumped..your a good DJ and worth the money. The amount of times ive had pubs approach me and its been a waste of my time and theirs, one of my first questions now is "what are you willing to pay".

Take a recent (as in last week) conversation, with the owner of a newly refurbished pub (paraphrasing on occasion):

Him: Im looking for a DJ work saturdays and to start on our opening night in **venue**, and we like the guy that you have in **second venue** on a friday.

Me: No problem, he is available for saturdays now. can i ask what your budget is.

Them: Well we were paying £45 before we shut, but could go up to £55-60ish

Me: Im sorry but **DJ** is a fully registered professional, and its unfeasible for him to work a walk-in job for less that £120.

Them: F:Censored: off, ill never pay that for a DJ, ill download a load of cds and get one of our lads glass collecting to do it for £20.

Me: Ok, sorry to have wasted your time.

I have said for years that one of the hardest things in this industry, if you want to take on multiple bookings etc...is finding professional, reliable DJ's who you could put out there to do a job under your name with 100% confidence. Fair play to the Multi Op's on here who have been doing it for a long time.
It's only recently that I have ventured into that side of things. I have always had 1 DJ that has done stuff for me but to be honest, it was probably around 15 gigs a year and they also got their own gigs too so I would'nt have classed myself as a Multi Op. In fact, I still don't even though I have another guy doing stuff for me who is brilliant (I hope he's reading this!) and as of today, maybe another one too? There is plenty of work out there and a lot of it in my area seems to be coming my way at the moment so my DJ's are getting regular stuff off me now because luckily I was booked up at the beginning of the year for dates throughout the year. Obviously I come first but if I am booked then I have no hesitation in them doing the job under my name. I guess that's what has stopped me from being more successful in the past.

As for managing them....or finding the time to manage them...not a problem, I love it. I like co-ordinating everything and it's what I am good at. The plan has always been to one day be in a position where I have lots of great DJ's who do all the functions and I co-ordinate it all and cherry pick the functions I want to do, if any.

I know some are already doing that and good luck to them, hats off to them! I wouldn't want to get too big and have 20 DJ's out in different venues every friday and saturday because I think that would mean taking on more staff which would mean more paying out and possibly less of a personal touch? I reckon I could manage 5 quite easily and be happy with that. One day... you never know.

Very good thread.

If you had asked this at the beginning of last year I would have said the main thing holding me back and stopping me from being more successful is my main 9-5 Monday-Friday job but as I was made redundant in March 2009 and not had another job to replace it since this wouldn't be main the reason now.

The main reason would now be MONEY...
Since I lost my job I have had to rely on the business and my very kind fiance (who is unable to work) and her benefits to keep me going (paying the bills which has left me with very little spare money). I owe a big thanks to my parents who kindly bailed me out last year by spending a large amount of cash on a much needed upgrade for the business. Had it not been for them I probably would have had to call it a day. I really needed new items of equipment as I really felt bad turning up to events with some of my old gear and needed a better image. I felt I was letting the client down turning up with what I had. Had I been still in my full-time job I could have afforded this myself and more.

Other reasons stopping me from being more successful are my SKILLS. I advertise how many years experience I have but I often feel that I may be misleading people as I am not great at beatmatching and my knowledge of simple things like sound and lighting connections and controls are not as good as I would want them to be. Even though a lot of events I do don't require this knowledge I feel I should know more than I do but not having the time has always been a problem when I was working and now the money is the problem. I would love to get more experience by haing training and going on courses etc.

The other things holding me back would be have to be spending time with my love of my life (fiance) and socialising with friends (having a life of my own which I felt for the first few years of doing mobile discos - I never had this). I been with my fiance for almost 2 years and we are having our first child this year. These things are more important to me than my business and that will not change. When I first started out I was single and I think running my own business held me back from having a realtionship and socialising was a problem as I would rarely have time off. I often felt isolated and alon but I alos felt that I couldn't give this up as it was like an addiction and it was something I enjoyed and probably the only thing that I was half good at! Over the last couple of years I have had to make sacrifices which I do not regret and if I had to make any changes to my life right now I would not hesitate in packing the discos in.
