Relocating

As some of you know, we have our house up for sale, hoping to move, failing that purchase a second house and rent our current home.

However, given the choice I would relocate to a totally different area (even country although still a bit half hearted). I don't really have any ties - apart from my business which is now starting to bring in a decent income.

And there is the stumbling block. I would need to move the business with me.

Has anyone done this or any experience of this ?? How long did it take to recover losses ?? Is it like starting up again ?? Is it worth it ??

I do have a second plan up my sleeve, but again need a lot more research.

Any input, ideas, suggestions, thoughts welcome - can you move your business easily ??

In August of 2007 I moved across from Belfast after starting the business off out there. Initially I was living in Liverpool but knew that just under 2 yrs on from then (Apr 09) I'd be moving permanently back to Derbyshire.

It was hard to begin but with the help of some of the good folk on here (Tony Penmare & Dave Dragonfly) I got sorted. One of the best descions I made although at the time it seemed a bit mad was to gig in Derbyshire for that inital 18months when I was living in Liverpool. There were alot of long drives (Liverpool to Derby returning the same night etc) and very late nights as at the time my day job ment I had to be back at work the next morning, but it was worth it as now after a year of proper fulltime it's going really well.

So to conclude "Yes" it is possible to relocate and build up again but don't expect it overnight and always seek the help from the local Djs. Networking pays huge dividends.

Ideally, thats what I would like to do. However the locations we are looking at would make this impossible. :(

No dramas. Another good thing I did was to move all the online listings etc to that area a good 6 month before I got there.

I honestly dont think you would find it any easier down south than here.

Firstly your living expenses would be drastically higher. Secondly you might well find that although the 'average' gig price down south is a little higher, the better gigs arent much different to here. So you would go from earning above average to earning just average and competing with a lot more other DJs for that.

Depending where in the South you are looking then there are loads of other things to factor in too. Most of my colleagues in the South dont earn more than I do, and in fact earn substantially less for some services.

I'm from London, born and bred, and now lived in the North East for 20 years. Having seen London in the 80s Boom (fantastic) and in the recession I can tell you that during the tough times the North East has far more opportunities, far lower living costs and is about the best place to be during bad times.

Have a chat when we finally arrange this meet up, but please dont go into this without open eyes and with unrealistic expectations. Just look at the amount of us southerners who have headed out of the South East for precisely these reasons lol!

And Canada - arent you too old for that? I thought they didnt allow croakies in now lol

The reasons for moving are purely personal and can't realistically happen for another couple of years. Business wise and financially it makes sense to stay put, but other factors to consider. I do have a plan b but still seeking advise.

A friend of mine moved back to Canada a few years ago (she was born there but came over here when she was younger). She was telling me last year that (I think it was the year before that) her provence was having such a good time of it they gave the residents a year's tax break! Also, the most serious crime they've had in her town since she moved back was some kids setting fire to a wheelie bin! Apparently, there was a huge outcry amongst the town folk over this!

If decide to go to Canada, please take me with you! ;)

Nah mate, only Yorkshire. Penmare regularly gets over £100 a night in Lincolnshire!!!!
