Upgrading

Right then guys, im planning my expenditure for upgrade purposes.

First on the list is a van!

Second on the list is a proper booth. Im veering towards the DSBP.

Third is my lighting, and thats where im stuck :(

As you know, I have different options/packages. Im thinking of seriously having a change around and ammending how i do things. In effect, ditching the Bronze, Silver or Gold, in favour of a basic disco, and ultimate/enhanced option (help with wording please), but only as far as lighting goes. Im gonna ditch the sound system option and take the sound that is required for the venue.

My basic rig, im thinking of having 2x Martin Wizard Extreme (or similar), nad having them monted directly onto the top of the upright lighting gantry pole on the DSBP, so theres no overhead. What do you guys think? Will it work, look ok.

Enhanced rig, im looking at two truss podiums with moving head and megapanel (flood type thing) , and the truss uplight.

Would this be enough do you think?

And do you think that im daft upgrading? I know its a case of why fix it if it aint broke, but i got my sound system sorted to be decent gear, and want my lighting to improve on from budget too.

I personally dont see the point in going down the whole package route. Why not have a standard show and if you get a client want something out of the ordinary (say a school prom for 500 people) then just charge them more accordingly.

I very rarely go out with more than 2 wizards, that does for the vast majority of venues, why spend money on more lights when that could be profit???

Having no overhead lighting works great for me, I love it that I look less like a 'disco'!

Im goping to have a stab in the dark and say that the EFX600 is better than the EFX500, so is the EFX600 better than the Wizards then?

Not off a DSB, but off a wind up stand which is hidden behind a speaker, although in this picture I kept them to the side of the speakers

Charlie, i would 100% agree with you, but as im nearly fully booked fridays and saturdays until well into next year now, equipment upgrade seems like a good option.

And as im also employed too, i can get a wedge of money back off the taxman if i offset my employed earnings against the business. ;)

Yes, but i want to be ahead of the competition, as much as possible anyway. When i got the rig ive got now, there was very few in the area that had it. Now everyone has Dynamos and MiracLEDs, even the Sids. Same with Uplighting. I start promoting it, and new a few of the other local operators are offering it. lol

The fact that you are fully booked says to me that you would be wasting your money by buying new kit.

take some profit out of the business and spend it on something fun like a holiday, I wouldnt bother wasting it on kit that wont make you more busy / any better (apart from in your own mind). Clients dont care about kit once you are at a certain level, for example if I upgraded to Wizard Extremes I can guartantee that it would get me no extra work, it would cost me £1,800 however!!!

Like Ben said if your already fully booked then I wouldnt invest unless your going to start charging more and that increased fee you feel is better jusified with the new equipment.

In all fairness that set up is more than eough to command a fairly decent fee. Maybe look to invest in extras like dancefloor,led uplighting, projectors etc...?

See, i thought that, but ive just ran a bit of market research, and im on par, or slightly above, pricewise with what i could consider similar other businesses.
