140 people last night at the most 15 people dancing most of the night dance floor was empty played all request wrote down a few songs will post em later
the lady who booked me said it was good and everyone enjoyed it becuase it was not so loud they could'nt have a chat the bar was packed all night
she booked me for another gig aswell
so what do you do i even used the mike to try to encourage em to dance something which i dont like to see
guess some people dont wanna dance or i'm in the wrong buisness:o

Difficult as it is, you shouldn't try and judge your performance on the number of people dancing.

People like to listen, chat and enjoy the atmosphere.

I had a 60th a little while ago where, apart from a few teens "dancing" (or rather, shuffling) to the occasional modern tune, the dancefloor was silent. Yet birthday boy was delighted.

Sometimes it's the opposite. Last weekend I had 35 in a room that could hold 100+. There was no-one this side of 40 apart from a couple of bored-looking teens grandkids, but the floor was never empty even when there were only 6 folks left at midnight :p

Agree with whats been said. When i cant get the dancefloor going, i usually look for telltale signes that peoples still enjoying themselves/music. I.e, tapping feet, the odd people singing along etc. The biggest giveaway is when their sat there waving their arms abround and bouncing around in their seats ;)

yea just i start to panick that i'm choosing the wrong songs when the floors empty like i cant find a good song to play
when most are dancing you feel like all the songs are flowing and every song you pick works
these lot are a farming community and have a lot of get togethers they like to go on really late
best response was a family i've done a party for before they just wanted all the party dances i played what they asked as they were up dancing would you do the same
or try somthing different to get the rest of the room up
also played poker face some teens got up at last. followed it with single ladies
they sat straight back down again wrong choice or not

also does anyone hold back on some of the big hitters for later in the night or just play them anytime

Keep an eye out on other reactions - feet tapping, singing etc.

Another measure I use, may be wrong to do so, is if people are not coming up for requests all night, after being invited too, then the music must be ok.

thats good then i send playlist forms around the room and only got the one or two reqeusts

This isn't intended as a dig, and bear in mind I grew up with Motown, but if I were restricted to one genre ( sorry Steve) for discos, it would be Motown.

They don't get much better than these two.

I did a wedding 2 weeks ago. the couple did the first dance and after that no one danced all night! they gave me line-dancing music to play through the buffet, thought it might provoke them to dance a little later on but it didnt, i pulled out all the stops trying to gee them up to no avail.....at the end the father of the bride came up and said they all really enjoyed my music and my show but don't like dancing. and i got a £10 tip, free drinks and buffet!

Just chilling out from a gig I did tonight (Thanks to Chris from PP Ents for the contact) An engagement party in Durham. No-one up dancing until after the buffet,

But wanted classic dance anthems and chart music all night. Loved it got got to play some house and trance I hadn't played in ages Fedde Le Grand Rui Da Silva etc. Motown unusually cleared the floor. Although average age was18-23 Just goes to show Motown doesn't always work

Then 10 mins from the end some numpty set the fire alarms off and they couldn't reset them. So we all had to evacate the building Until the fire brigade arrived. They wanted me to leave everything as it was. To hell with that I was powering down and switching off properly. Poor end to what was great night overall

Surely the time to play that is AFTER the buffet when people CAN dance, its impossible to Line Dance eating food although some do it with drinks of course:eek:

i think the timing of stuff was all wrong the party started at 8pm lights in the hall were on buffet was at 9pm well hog roast. they were still eating gone 10pm
so missus asked for the lights to be switched of so the bar staff turned off the lights then the bloke whos party it was cut the cake lights back on after 10 minutes he also said he did'nt want to make a speech so after getting everyone to sing happy birthday and three cheers i put celebration on he popped up hang on i wanna do a speech so i'm like oh allright then took till 12 to get get the lights of again :bang:

I also find a lot of people do not like to dance if the hall is too bright, so that wouldn't have helped your plight much. On the whole, we all get these kind of nights, for one reason or another.... another tell tale sign is to see if they have all brought their car, a full car park is not always good, as, if they are sober it is harder to get them dancing. We then have teenagers, who, mostly think they are too cool to dance.In many cases the family party is the only time they get together, so they just want to chat and catch up!;)

An interesting observation of mine recently==a lot of people seem more interested in food than the :Censored: Entertainment.

The booze used to be the main opposition---oh must have another drink at the bar ----now its food :eek:
