As you know im easily confused, andyway im still looking around at new lights and a couple im drawn to use the HID150 lams, whilst a second feature uses the 250w discharge.

How different is the output on these two lamps? I would guess that the 250w is far brighter? Yes/No lol

Cheers

Steve

depends on the exact lamp, but a 250w MSD lamp will be considerably brighter than a 150w HTI lamp.

250w MSD lamps also have a considerably longer service life than 150w HTI lamps - 2000 hours against 750 hours for the HTI.

As always, i strongly recommend the use of quality branded lamps from philips / GE / osram / sylvania, and no others. Whilst they might be a lot cheaper in the first place, they will not last, may well damage the fixture and reperesent a false economy.

So in that case, if im going down the route i want to go, its either completely HTI, or completely MSD. :)

Are you sure on that i have 2 hti effects with 6000 hour lamps on them. And while im sure the 250w is brighter I was under the impresssion that the 150 had the longer life.

I have some awesome Shiva MSD250 scanners but used to own some HID150's. The MSD's are much brighter and as has been said they last at least 1500 hrs before the colour starts to yellow. :)

hang on a minute :)

he said 150 HID lamp not 150 HTI

if you are referring to the Acme 150 HID lamp, then theres a big difference between that and a 150 HTI.

The HTI 150 is way better.

And the 250w MSD is better still,,thats the daddy !!

Yes it was the Acme 150HID lamps im on about.

Im still toying with the idea of a complete revamp, and would have loved to go down the route of 2x Martin Wizard Extremes, and 2x Martin Mac 250 Kryptons, but cant justify the expense.

Ive seen the iSolution Imove 250s which have all im looking for in the Mac's (Prism and rotating gobos etc), and take the 250w MSD lamp. I was looking for a cheaper similar thing to the Wizard Extremes, and came across the iSolutions HID-150 iShow 6B which looks to have a similar effect, but uses a HID150 lamp.

its not really a similar effect,, the wizard is different, its not just a barrel,, its like a moonflower and a barrel combined.

2 wizard extremes is a good idea,,shop around, you'll get em for £780 each i guess.

if youre gonna get isolutions,,i'd get the IR7B's

they dont look quite as smart as the IS6B;s but they perform way better

the 250w msd pees over the acme 150 hid lamp..

PS you could always buy my Martin EFX700's

all 4 for £1000 cash !!!

virtually brand new...now thats a bargain !!

Prolights website shows the iShow 6B to be just that.

Im definaely looking for the moonflower/barrel combo as aposed to the standard barral

Figured as much lol

Thats a serious bargain, im tempted but want to get the moving heads and barrel type thing first. Ive a list a mile long of upgrades to be had lol

In the same vein as the wattage of a loudspeaker driver gives you no indication of how loud it will play, the same principle applies with lighting.

The brightness of a luminaire is measured in lumens, the wattage is simply the power required to run the lamp.

In regards to Tony's post,

well, whilst you are correct, the differences as regards efficiency within one technology, i.e. discharge lamps is much more limited than with loudspeaker systems

Most metal halide discharge lamps produce 85 - 100 lumens per watt, and whilst there are numerous types of halide lamps with slightly different chemistry and arc lengh, most types used in entertainment lighting are fairly similar in efficiency terms.

Of course, you have to look at the fixture as a whole, and different units, with different optics will be very different as regards efficiency.

But, in general, it is much more possible, in lighting to judge performance based on power than it is with sound systems, where, as you correctly suggest, it is a false indication of "loudness"

but saying that...

i wouldnt say try and make speaker analogies

just judge each lamp on its specs as they do vary

at 150w, you've low end lamps like the acme 150 hid,,,,and then youve got high end lamps like the osram hsd 150 or the philips msd150/2 which are almost as bright as an msd250/2.

and at 250w, they vary between the manufacturers.

i mean a soundlab 250w msd isnt anywhere near as good as a philips 250w msd/2

also, the lumens does tell you how bright a lamp is,,,but its the colour temp that's important..

What about this YouTube- American DJ Vizi Spot 5R (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVF60ZssJYc&feature=related)
It has the new philips 160w lamp which is near the output to a 575 lamp
