Hi there is a post on this already as for once i have used the search :p

direct line came up as the only solution.

Who do you use

and

do you declare yourself as a mobile DJ or a sound and light technician or something?
as they can be funny about "dj" being a profession.

Thanks in advance.

Im with Quidco if that helps as you can get good discounts with them.

And then when you have a claim your insurance will be invalid.

Toby.... check out Tesco Insurance... Give them a call and explain you are a "Mobile Disco" and are not in the professional/TV/Movie section.

My Insurance for fully comp was £270 for the year including business cover.

That sounds good. at the end of the day my gear is covered too. cant see why it is such a high risk? a builders tools can be worth allot more than my gear etc.

I am definitely not messing around and not hiding anything as i cannot afford to have invalid insurance and end up paying for a prang with a ferrari or something! I have been driving around all week thinking it was covered on my other insurance and they do not do vans!!

So you don't actually have valid insurance then (when out gigging).

Insurance is based on the principle of 'utmost good faith', if you fail to declare something or knowingly with hold information that is salient then the insurer will declare your policy void ab initio (void at inception).

If you look at the small print on any insurance policy it will state that, so if you choose to keep silent about your second job (as a DJ), or disguise your job title, or do anything whatsoever to hide or conceal what you are doing then you run the risk of the following happening

1) Your policy been declared void, no claim will be paid out for your loss, but if the insurer has to make a payment to a third party (read the Road Traffic Act if you want to know why they are duty bound to do that), then they will come after you for recovery of their outlay

2) Your policy having been declared void will mean that you have to disclose that to other potential future insurers (house, car, travel etc etc ), and that is going to either cause you a big hike in premiums or a flat refusal to insure

3) A possible charge of driving without insurance (that's 6 points and a fine so expect any future insurance premiums to go up).

In my opinion it is just not worth it, as someone said earlier Insurers are not stupid and things like the IH (Insurance Hunter), CIFAS and MIAFTR databases make it easier than you think for them to find out.

I am with Direct Line on Multi Car/Van.

I have my Peugeot Expert Van(08 Plate) & Ford KA(2000 reg) insured with them, they offer your No Claims Bonus on both vehicles. :)

Van Insurance for this year was just under £1000.

Ford KA last year was £600. (give or take a few £ and p)

I have 3 points and 4 years no claims bonus and 22.

You lot are lucky at £200. Grrrr! :P

Interesting that people have insurance with Direct Line as they told me categorically that they do not insure mobile Disc Jockeys. What JTRS says above is totally correct. Be careful what wool you try and pull!
Having said that I use Aquote, who have no problems at all with DJs, and (at my age anyway!) are very competitive.

I spent years insured with Norwich Union (now Aviva), they had no problem with the "mobile disco". As I told them, with the best part of £20K in the back of the vehicle, I would be driving very carefully. I am now with ...SAGA, they don't have a problem either...and their cheaper :)

Yet again a higher risk to the insurer. Besides, most famous people have specialist policies costing alot more than standard insurance policies.

Actually it's not so much that as the fact that insurance actuaries calculate the premiums on frequency and severity (ie the number of accidents that a particular age range/ occupation class / gender etc have and how much each of those accidents ends up costing them). Because these statistics are built up over a number of years the increased premiums/refusals to insure are a throwback to the years when anyone working in licensed premises (landlords, bar staff, waiters, entertainers etc) was considered a higher risk because of the ease of access to alcohol, that was due to the high number of claims they had because of the number of accidents they were involved in (other factors such as tiredness and driving home late at night also played a part but alcohol was the main culprit).

Some of the newer Companies (those that don't have the claims records from the bad old days) will happily accept DJ's etc, as will the ones that went through a period of not accepting them years ago (because when they stopped insuring them they had no claims made by DJ's so they actually look a good risk when looking at frequency and severity statistics).

Just to go crystal clear with this one I spoke to direct line this morning and "YES" they will insure mobile DJ's. The bloke on the phone said that if I was to DJ from the van then I wouldn't be covered as this would be classed as trading from the van but as I'm removing the kit from the van into a venue then this is ok ;)

He likened it to a Market seller that if they open their van and allow people to buy items from within it then they're not covered but if they were to put a table at the back of it then sell from said table then that's fine :D

Checked your policy booklet out? I doubt it would cover business equipment.

My policy states that it also covers me for driving in connection with my own business, but only for 3rd party claims. (I'm fully comp for social/domestic/pleasure) so I assume at some point i told them I had a main job and my own business. I've been with them for about 7 years and they have never asked me what my own business was. (That I remember). I can only assume that i told them my main mileage was NOT for my business, which is true.

Yup, mine went up by about £150 with direct line, but an hours ringing around and searching on the web and I still couldn't get it any cheaper anywhere else... I was told by 3 different companies that policies were higher this year as the insurance companies had to pay out for so many claims over the winter last/this year (more than they had expected anyhow).

Toby.... check out Tesco Insurance... Give them a call and explain you are a "Mobile Disco" and are not in the professional/TV/Movie section.

My Insurance for fully comp was £270 for the year including business cover.

I too use Tesco and checked with them and they don't put you in the high risk category as recorded, they were more than happy although will say my motor insurance with 1 claim in 3 years, and protected NCD was £900(and I'm nearly 40, and a 21 yrs / clean license) but the thing was it cost me little more than a quote without the 'second job' mentioned.

it transpires my car costs me more as it is the 136bhp????? model it's a bl***y 7 seater 807 and they are as standard a 120bhp. It's hardly a sports car!

In the end piece of mind and knowing your always covered, no risk of been stopped by the BIB (sorry boys in blue) and potentially what could be deemed as driving without insurance, or at least driving not in accordance with your insurance policy. I'm sure when asked your insurer would use this as a way of not honouring a policy. If you did encounter a problem try getting insured next time round!

I have known DJ's who have been stopped and found not to using the vehicle as per their policy, and therefore deemed uninsured. Vehicle and potentially contents could be seize under newer powers. I am sure it would be difficult to explain Social Domestic, and pleasure use with £1,000's of disco kit in the motor. If you have business use (Class 1 etc) it will all then depend on the details within the text in the policy.

One thing to always bear in mind with vehicle insurance there is a requirement to inform them of anything you may (or may not) think to be of relevance. Technically that could include second jobs (or part time) and any other material facts they may deem relevant. (As already stated) I'm not in the insurance business but have asked variouso lawyers / Traffic Police I have worked with over the years. In the past I am aware that West Midlands Police for example have actively 'looked out' for those in Bands and mobile Discos etc during peak seasons (Christmas)

Cheers but most car insurers will not do commercial vans i am afraid. I got mine with a specialist van company.

It will always be more expensive due to the added use and risk of goods being on board. :)

Note clause in the direct line policy (from their web site)
"
Your business or the business of your employer is not in anyway connected with any of the following: the entertainment and fashion industry, professional sports, foreign service, foreign diplomatic personnel, mini-cab drivers or mini-cab controllers.

I don't know if I have put this on here before and I am not looking back but I have a van policy fully comp with Zenith Insurance through A-Plan brokers in Eastleigh. Fully comp £224 for my 2000 'X' Citroen Relay 1.9Deisel
Admittedly I have full no claim.
The policy says 'Occupation- Disco Jockey', and the van is ensured to 'carry own goods'
Exclusions listed do not include anything to do with music or disco equipment. I have read all small print and this was discussed when I first had insurance through them and every renewal.

I had a lengthy chat with them and have been told that they will NOT take NEW business from the industry, but any existing customers may continue with them - even with a new vehicle.

So Steve has been informed incorrectly, since as an existing customer of long-standing, he should be allowed to continue with them.

Well I just don't understand this, when I was on the phone to them this morning, I did mention about being on a forum for mobile dj's (I did not mention this or any other forum or members names, just to be clear)
And it seems that what Steve has been told is the complete opposite to me.
This was checked with 2 underwritters and any insurance is allocated by "risk" and a "normal" mobile dj (as in not a well know public figure) is NOT classed as a high risk proffesion. It seems the goal post's move depending on who you speak to. Oh well just have to wait untill my renewal in june to see what happens.

However, I would also like to give honourable mentions to the Eastleigh Branch of A-Plan (02380 618844) for being the next best & if for any reason I have to leave direct line in the future, I know where I'll be going.

Direct line told me that the underwriters have totally changed the commercial vehicle policys. They would not give me insurance for being a dj,apparantly this trade is now not covered under the commercial vehicle policy.Like mark says his renewal came in at the new price.he will be ok as an existing policyholder but for me starting new iam not covered.Yep. That seems to be the case when we got to the bottom of it. Clearly the :muppet: Steve spoke to the first time today hit the 'new customer' button by mistake, and then the second time they just followed on from what was input the first time.

I got a great deal through commercial vehicle direct.fully comp with loads of extra add ons for the annual price of £493.13.Bearing in mind i have no claims discount on my van,i thought this was a fantastic deal compared to others.

However, I would also like to give honourable mentions to the Eastleigh Branch of A-Plan (02380 618844) for being the next best & if for any reason I have to leave direct line in the future, I know where I'll be going.

But were you an existing customer Darren? That seems to be the sticking point.

I got my insurance from them June this year, and no I was not an existing customer. They also said there are no planned changes with regard's to insuring me next year, as a mobile disc jockey.

I think they may do it on a case by case basis and certain factor's come into play as regard to risk, like where you live, previous driving history etc, but then again, they might just pull straws when you call!

It's relatively recent that they've changed and they are no longer taking on new customers in this industry, so you got in in June before the changes and so may continue with them ad infinitum.

Mind you, they did say that the underwriters' list can and does change on a very regular basis - sometimes daily  so there's nothing to say that the underwriters won't change their mind again at some point in the future!!!

Have you thought of becoming an Entertainer? :sofa:

Got to love insurance :(
Don't get me started.

:bang:

I think I might give them a call as an 'independent' on behalf of all MDD members. Might get to speak to someone else to get some clarification!
May I wish you the very best of luck in your endeavours.

I did. Having typed it out, I wasn't deleting it. And I still am of the belief that the entire industry and its staff have dispensed totally with common sense and reason, which is why the need for luck arises. :D

Well the lady on the phone did put me on hold, and spoke to 2 underwritters and she told me they DO except mobile disc jockeys, it had nothing to do with me already be insured with them, as I did not tell them to start with.

Just to go crystal clear with this one I spoke to direct line this morning and "YES" they will insure mobile DJ's. The bloke on the phone said that if I was to DJ from the van then I wouldn't be covered as this would be classed as trading from the van but as I'm removing the kit from the van into a venue then this is ok

He likened it to a Market seller that if they open their van and allow people to buy items from within it then they're not covered but if they were to put a table at the back of it then sell from said table then that's fine

Dave, please have a read here: http://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/showthread.php?t=32729 and learn how to quote other people's posts. It's very confusing doing what you've done above, since no-one knows where the quote starts or ends, plus you can't easily refer back to the previous post that you've quoted to see it in context.

In any event, what you're doing takes a lot more effort than doing it properly! ;) :D

:thanks:

I don't know if I have put this on here before and I am not looking back but I have a van policy fully comp with Zenith Insurance through A-Plan brokers in Eastleigh. Fully comp £224 for my 2000 'X' Citroen Relay 1.9Deisel
Admittedly I have full no claim.
The policy says 'Occupation- Disco Jockey', and the van is ensured to 'carry own goods'
Exclusions listed do not include anything to do with music or disco equipment. I have read all small print and this was discussed when I first had insurance through them and every renewal.

Why not give A-Plan a call for a quote?

Further tip, I sent a photocopy of my licence to A-Plan and recieved a further discount this year taking my insurance lower than last year.
If anyone asks for a quote with A-Plan at Eastleigh don't forget to ask if you can get further discount. Also don't forget a higher excess sometimes lowers the quote.
