Setup Priorities

How would you prioritise the following :

1. Brands of equipment
2. Lighting
3. Presentation
4. Sound
5. Playout

The above are intentionly in a random order, and not in the order that I would put them in. This is a matter of opinion, and it would be interesting to see how you categorise them.

You missed Music. That's vital. I was tempted to insert Mic Work but that would have been puerile.

I shall post my opinion after a few more posts ;)

Music and Mic work are in a different category really, I was mainly focussing on how it looks and sounds, more than what the geezer stood behind it was doing.

Surely some of these go hand in hand (although there is always the exception). I.e, Your soound often depends on your mixer (playout), and the nicer sounding mixers are usually the decent brands...

I'd say presentation. The way you present yourself and come across to your audience. Garry obviously does a lot of mic work and that's important to him for the kind of gigs he does. I don't use the mic that much to be honest. It's funny because at last nights gig I said over the mic "I've got some great requests here which I will be working my way through" and someone shouted out "Get on with it then" (it was in the final hour)...that kind of embarassed me a bit and I felt myself going red....I replied "That's exactly what I'll do then!".

Sound is important obviously, as is music but how many times has it been said on here that it's not always about the equipment...it's about YOU. There are some dodgy looking set up's out there but they have good DJ's behind them and vice versa. I don't have the best equipment in the world but I think it's of a good standard and at the end of the day, I know that I know what I am doing.

Are your average guests ever going to say "The DJ was very good but his equipment was a bit bad. He didn't use any of the top branded equipment". You're more likely to hear "The DJ was rubbish" or "The DJ was great"...in my opinion.

I think all of you have contributed a piece to the jigsaw puzzle. I inititally asked the list of priorities based on the setup, as I found that some put lighting before sound etc.

Based on my original points, I always thought that sound was most important, but that is coming from myself (a user of equipment), rather than a client or guest.

From the rig POV, I think that I would prefer less lights (decent ones) with a decent sounding PA system, than a rubbish PA, and loads of lights. Customer service etc is also important, of course.

I wouldn't worry about the comment "get on with it then", it's just a guest having a laugh, I wouldn't let it affect your confidence in MCing :)
