How many use CDs / how many use digital playout

Just curious as to what proportion of the forum still use CDs, and how many have now converted to digital playout systems.

I'm doing this as a straight poll - one or the other (no add on for 'will be going over / both / etc... you can add any details/comments in a post on the thread).

Please answer in respect of your main playout system (I know there are some using digital who use CD for back up, etc)

I have always used CD's as my playout system and I absolutely love it, I cant ever see me getting a laptop.

I am however in the process of converting my CD's to MP3 so that I can have them on a hard drive plugged into my Pioneer MEP 7000 which will make finding the more obscure tracks a lot easier. I can still see me using CD's even when the harddrive is fully loaded with my music though!

I too need both. Im in the process of giving my one up to produb :D ;) by still using CDs but phasing them out with bought MP3, downloaded direct to the external HDD

Im back to using cd's. Did move over to digital but since I only do a select number of gigs now, I have gone back to the cd folders as its not worth having produb for the small income I make from DJ'ing. Plus I do mostly house or electro sets so I have 2 tracks per cd so I can be more flexible.

I make use of my full digital library on my home HTPC.

I use both.

Denon DN-HD2500 for digital playout
Denon DN-D4000 Twin CD player (The name gives it away that its used to play cds at a disco)

I might be tempted to make the move away from digital and go back to cds as im not that keem on the quality of mp3s even at 320kbps.
so i might just use the hd2500 as a backup.

I know you have a bit of a bee in your bonnet about this Lee and you think that all DJs should use wav but what I don't understand is that you use your wav files through some cheap Behringer mixer. :confused:

I have used .wav and 320kbps on high end system, through top quality mixers, and the sound quality difference has always been negligable....

CD's for me at the moment. The cost's involved in transfering to a digital playout system don't add up for me at the moment.

Plus ripping all my CD's to a hardrive sounds like a nightmare. Then there's the cost of buying a digital playout system and which one? OMG I've gone crosseyed:daft:

The results from this poll are shaping up to be quite interesting to me.

You can sometimes get the impression on the forum that virtually everyone is using digital playout systems now. I've got a couple of DJs who just do not want to go over to a digital playout system, they would much prefer to stay with the CDs. I was starting to think that they were in a very small minority, but clearly there are plenty others out there sticking with their CD systems for now.

Same here so for me it's both.

The multi-CD players work with a VocoPro graphics decoder to enable CD+G playback for karaoke. Also, the twin CD systems I have both support CD+G playback so I'm still sticking with discs for now. However, the core library for disco has now been re-bought as digital downloads dirct to my external drive.

Mind you, once I get the funding in place for a new playout system (which I've been promised by about September - if I can increase our bookings for this year significantly!) then I'll be looking at going down the Digital/ProDub route but I know it'll be a massive task to convert my CD+Gs to MP3+G files. So, as of yet, I'm undecided but I'm keeping my options open.

I think Darren meant that what Lee is gaining by using wavs he is losing by using a budget mixer. The signal to noise ratio on Behringer equipment tends to not be very good.
