Active speaker recommendations

The story is after another scare with my bad back I really need to look at active speakers.

What I am looking for to begin with is a 'light' system which can cope with around 120 people in a small / medium hall. I have been looking at the LD Dave systems but not sure if they will suffice.

Ideally would prefer new (personal preference) and a budget of around £800. I know it's not a lot but just decided that I really need to go down this route before next month when there are at least 2 gigs a week, sometimes 3 or 4 which require setting up and packing away, and stays like that till the middle of September. I am looking to buy this system to then use as backup or smaller gigs in future and purchase a 'bigger' system.

Personal preference again - no mackies. I have a set installed and not overly keen on them :o

a HK Audio Lucas 1000 or HK Performer off ebay would be a good shout even if its not new. They can be picked up for about £650/£700 secondhand bearing in mind they cost £1500.00 new.

Chris. i can recommend the RCF 312a. If you want to hear them them give me a shout and ill either come over your way, or you can pop over. The beauty is that you can add a 705as at a later date if need be...

I would defo go for RCF'S 10 INCHERS.

Loudest on market and good value in my opinion.

I have passives but used the actives last night.

10kg i think and very small. nice carry handle on top and you can get some good cases for £70 or so.

I've read a side by side comparison of 7 pairs of 10" active speakers including Mackie, JBL etc - The RCF 310A (which I am seriously considering) came second to FBT MAXX-2a - which I hadn't heard mentioned before on the forum.
As they are approx £200 cheaper a pair I wondered if anyone had these or knew any more about them or the brand? I'm all up for saving £200 quid if they sound as good or better

Are you sure about that? I think you're getting your speakers confused John. You had your RCFs way before the Mackie V2 came out.

it might of been the V1s then. I have heard the Mackie v2s and the rcf side by side in the same shop over at electromusic in doncaster where i bought my tops from. I popped in when i was up that way before.

Honestly if your doing any sized room i would definitely get an rcf sub. or mackie for that matter.

It will make the world of difference and well worth the money :)

If you cant afford it cheaper options are available. Taco thump for example.

Bad back join the club what speakers have you been using before as actives tend to be a lot heavier than actives.I have had a lot of active systems and as other posts have indicated you cant go wrong with RCF the new 7 series are a lot lighter than the older type the FBT are also very good i would not go down the sub route as all the active subs are very heavy and you have indicated you want something that is light and portable.The tapco thumps are quite light and there new version not the ones with the yellow handles are very good value for money and have good bass also have a look at the new DB Tecnologies range very light and good sound.I have cured by back issues and have just sold my RCF active system 2 x325A and 2x 705 subs and bought a nexo system the wife now roadies but i have no money very costly
