Cables

I'm trying to cut down how much equipment I take to a gig, as space in the car is getting rather tight!

The only things I don't use but always take are cables. Obviously I use some cables, however, I always carry a large box of lots of cables and only ever use a handful. I like to know I have back up should a cable fail, or a longer speaker cable if I have to run it on the other side of the room, but is it silly taking so many cables?

If I could lose that large box for something smaller it would certainly give me more space.

What do you do? Lots of cables? Or just those that are required plus back up for important cables?

Im the same i tend to take a box full of cables be it iec, dmx, speakon etc etc as you never know what will happen, the only thing i could think of is if your trying to free up space just take a couple of the ones you need and a few spare fuses just incase in a bag which you could pop under the front seat etc

Yeh that may be the way to do it.

I've also just thought that an Arriba style canvas bag may be a better option than a box?

I've got a previa with more nooks & crannies than a space shuttle. Have a good poke around and you'll find all kinds of spare cables, repair kit, CA8, fuses, hard drive, Numark PSU, Dell PSU and all manner of things I might need one day.

No point carting stuff in and out of a venue if you never use it, but it's nice to know it's waiting outside just in case.

From my experience the vast majority of faults are cables. I could rewire the BT tower with the amount of cable I take with me (Why I need to have 70m of speaker cable with me beggers belief, but two 10m have jack ends to Speakon and I have speakon jack connector blocks in case I ever need to do the other side of the world with a cab.)

Anyhow I digress. Find a way to carry your cables as you may need them. Hint if you are using a car. your spare wheel in the boot will have a nice circular recess in the middle of it. Nice spot for wound cables if you ask me. Back to the old days before a trailer.

I keep cutting my cables down to one or two boxes to save carting so many about. Then they find their way back into the van. :( :(

Indeed there is, but here's my dilemma...is it sensible to spend £50-£100 on a spare mic when I've been using one nearly every night for as many years as I have without a single problem, and when I'll only be using one for a few more years?

I however took another step to ensure that my punters never miss my pearls of wisdom, when I picked up an unswitched SM58 last week. Since it's unswitched, I can never have it switched off by mistake. Clever, eh?

They have a good pick up range them babies. I think I would find it tricky to remember to keep turning it off on the desk. I wouldn't want the guests to hear some of the in booth discussions over the music.

Used to work in a venue where the staff would not approach me, until they saw me flick the mic kill switch. ;) ;) :D :D :D :D
