Adding mp3 tracks to website?

Hi All,

I always like to do everything by the book so here goes my question ...

Do I need a licence to play mp3 tracks on my website? They won't be downloadable. I'm sure I seen a similar post previously so my apologies for this being asked again.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

I added some recordings of my singing on my website as MP3 downloads and the PRS called me saying I needed to pay £120 per year per website... £240 in my case - so I had to remove them.

But I have just added some mp3s to my website from amazon and I think it is legal. If Amazon are providing the code and hosting the music then I can't see how I could be made to pay the PRS for it.

You need to sign up to Amazon Affilliate scheme and use their mp3 widget to get the code. Very easy to do.

It has got me work before so I will probably have music as a part of my new site. It is all about the music after all .....

I think it depends on your target market. For anyone targeting anything other than teens/18ths/possibly 21sts/schools/raves then I would strongly suggest not going down this route for umpteen reasons that any good marketing manual will cover in the first couple of paragraphs.

Surely most B&Gs will already have a good idea on what they want their first dance to be? Its not usually something thats picked at random as far as im aware ;)

To answer your first post, you need permission from copyright holder(s) and you have to pay copyright fees to broadcast any music on a web site, unless waived by them.

This means, yes, you do need a licence.

Having spent 3 years on the LWP working with MCPS/PRS/PPL, I think I am fairly well suited to advise you.

The only music you can use legally is your own or out of copyright.

If you do go down this route make sure that you don't have autoplay on. nothing worse thatn loading a site up and have music playing.
