Last night was a pretty good night in most ways, but one aspect nearly ruined it for me. Drinks on the dancefloor. What is it with taking your drinks onto the floor with you, and treating everbody in a five metre radius to a Beer/Cider/Lager/Alcopop shampoo? :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

Most of the punters were very well behaved and nice, but there4 were a huge number of drinks in hands. And on the floor. And on the punters. And worst of all, at one point on my gear. :eek: :eek: :eek: :bang: :bang: :bang: Fortunately, not a lot, and not on sensitive kit, but good heavens, it's a nightmare.

I had this regular venue.A lovely older lady used to attend.She thought it was a great laugh to bring along one of those huge water pistol Supersoakers to the evenings and soak everyone.:eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

Drinks on the dance floor is one of my pet hates, but something we don't seem to be able to do much about, because whenever I've made announcements about this, I've been pretty much ignored.

The worst I've known was a big wedding at a racecourse a few years back when I was working with the Counterfeit Stones. The dance floor became more like a pond than a dance floor. After my announcements were ignored, the staff made me stop the music & clear the dance floor while they got the mops out to dry it.

A few weeks back, I had a similar problem with drinks on the dance floor, and about once every 30 minutes someone would drop their pint glass, so not only was the dance floor wet, but kept getting covered in broken glass too...lovely! The bride came up & asked me to finish 30 minutes early, and I'm sure this was the reason, because apart from that the gig was going very well.

Did a wedding in Newcastle last night which was a really good night apart from about 10 mins where we deliberatley put a track on we knew would kill the dancefloor.

Just so we could get the drunken nut jobs off the floor as we had to keep pushing them away to stop them crashing straight into the decks:(

Slightly off topic but hey ho.

I will say since having the DSB I've been alot better protected, no one trying to lean over, no attempting to put thier drinks on the booth and I've really noticed that they come around the sides to make requests now :)

The only person to spill anything on my kit last night was one of the bar staff collecting glasses at the end of the night and that was only on an empty gig bag. I did have the last laugh though as he dropped most of them before he made it back to the bar :D :D

Grim, isn't it, when this happens? I have no helpful advice, last night, after I warned them, I saw one lad take notice, and move away. Ten seconds later, he waltzed straight acros the front of the rig! :bang: Attention span of a Goldfish. :bang:

I've done a venue in Dewsbury a few times and the owner has put notices up saying 'No Drinks Allowed On The Dancefloor', and to reinforce that he tells the DJ's to stop the music if they see anyone with a drink on the dancefloor and announce on the mic for them to take the drink off the dancefloor.

May seem a bit draconian, but once you've done that once or twice the guests stop bringing them on.

I'm not sure how it would go down at every venue, but it certainly works at this one.

If any drinks are left on my gear I move it to a nearby table. You get the odd drunk bloke looking for it then thinking he didnt have a drink lol. But most ask and I tell them where it is.

Think it all boils down to nobody taking responsibility for the event and making sure rules are followed.

I tend to do the no drinks on dancefloor bit and get a table close designated as the drinkers table and tell people to put on there please. Not normally a problem if you ask nicely , the occasional rude comment but as I have the mic my replies can be much funnier.

The 18th I did last weekend had issues with people drinking on the dancefloor. I was asked to make an announcement about removing the drinks, and placing them on a nearby table. So, I did - but they all just ignored me anyway... the bar staff then refused to serve anyone until all drinks had been taken off the dancefloor. That seemed to do the trick.

In a public venue people will bring their drinks either in case they are stolen/taken by bar staff, or fear of them being spiked. The latter being quite valid I suppose:shrug:

I like the suggestion about stopping the music until people with drinks on the floor have removed them, as long as you give them plenty of advanced warning at the start of the night while people are sober.

I will try that this weekend. I'm sure real party people who want to dance will get behind you and encourage these people to leave the dance floor.
