What do you have\prefer in your current lightshow?
I have gone of the led effect lights and reverted back to the traditional units such as my martin efx 600s,acme dynaroll\dynatwin,and occasionaly the njd datamoons.
The positives for led are of the lightweight\no bulbs to replace ect
but the negatives ofcourse............coloued dots.and the need for haze\smoke.
untill we get much better led effects with dmx\goboflowers i am a traditional man.

I'm in the same camp as you.
A while ago I came close to buying an Impossibled...until I realised it was just a load of coloured dots.
I use 8 pinspots, a couple of mirror scanners, a mushroom light and a gobo flower.
I know the LED effects are lighter, don't need lamps replacing, use less power & don't get hot...but for me, that's not enough.

I won't be buying LED until they also have the same effects as halogen lights etc with the gobos/colour wheels instead of horrible dots everywhere.

What??!!   Strewth mate, that would have put a hell of a dint in the retirement fund!!!
My standard rig is three KAM LED panels, and four Revo Roll LED barrel scanners. Light, easy, and plenty of movement. However, I'm not totally happy with it, and I'm still trying to work out how to modify it to my satisfaction. I also have three working, and a possible fourth Geni Spin 3 Halogen units, and if they weren't so :Censored: heavy, I'd probably use them more. Whether to use two Revos and two Genis together, I'm not sure.
When LED fixtures are fitted with about 10watt white LEDs and Gobos, I think we'll throw all the halogen fixtures in the skip. Till then................

We're fully LED with two Acme Dynarocks, Acme Mircaled and 4 LEDJ Colourbursts for a usual rig. But also have a laser, and a traditional double derby effect which has great coverage... but produces coloured beams so isnt that much different to an LED effect.
However the Martin Efx's that many have on the forum are lovely effects and I wouldnt mind getting some but I think it always comes back to the argument... do the guests really notice the difference and care that much in relality?

I have the Geni XTC version, 6KG for a simply mirror movement effect! I love it but would be used better for weightlifting instead of disco lighting:p

I have replaced 2 LED effects with conventional ones , LED`s still have a long way to go , even now a 20w plus LED fixture is about the same size and weight as a halogen fixture , so whats the point  .
saying that , LED`s are good for uplighting and wash effects.

I use a combination of halogen and LED.
Like everything there's no right or wrong and combining the 2 different types can enhance the overall show.

It's not all about dots Rob- our moving heads are LED and you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between them and conventional movers.
You could also argue that a load of dots is actually a lot more than you get from 8 pinspots, which surely is really just one dot?

Wish I'd had a load of spotboxes last night, and a pair of Mackies. Spent all night freezing my bits off in a marquee. :( :(

I accept that it's not all about dots, but MOST of it seems to be.

I completely agree, but a load of dots is NOT a lot more than you get from a gobo flower or mirror scanners.
LED technology is not there yet, although it probably will be around the time I retire.

Wimp Try a Martin EFX500 (Weight: 12.5 kg)

CJ. that's as sensible a suggestion as anyone has made to my lighting quandary. It's a non starter, unless I find anyone desperate for some panels, and a good replacement for them, but thanks anyway.
Smart money's on a laser appearing under the Kams at some point in the future, but who knows? I certainly don't.

I saw one of the videos what Mike From Phase one was doing on the American DJ Comscans that they do. For LED they looked alright in terms of brightness.
Im not a big fan of the Impossiled, Revo, quad gem or any of the effects like swingfire or any of those. The only led kind of effects that i like particularly are the parcans. My disco lighting is all 250w Halogen apart from the led pars

Ah, now I wondered why they discontinued the Puma's... How on earth can they justify that price though when the majority of the components become cheaper with LED (except the LED, but that's not £65.00!?) I'm guessing Prolight would probably say the development cost?

I'm still a half and half kind of guy:)
Regularly use 2x ImpossibLED's and 4/6 LED Par's, and my LED starcloth
But still keeping both my lasers, Dynamo and my Puma's for now.
I think it's good to have a mixture of effects.

I'm in the 'bit of both' camp and agree that both can work well when controlled correctly.
I quite like the dots, what put me off of these at first was the mad strobing/flashing rave type of effect they produce when in stand-alone mode.
They become a completely different type of effect under DMX control. Slowed down and gently dimming up and down for warm-up and slow dances, synchronized colours/pattern so that the halogen and led fixtures work together and compliment each other. Under DMX control the LED fixtures can also be put back into sound-to-light mode for when you want that mad rave effect.
One of my favourite effects is having the up-lighting, scanners, movers and LED fixtures on a Red, Green & Blue sound-to-light sequence... the whole venue 'jumps' from one colour to the next in time, it's an epileptic's nightmare!! :D

I use a mixture of the two, LED lights do have their uses but when you start getting 10w and 20w LED lights they no longer have the cool running advantage.
Although unlikely, LED’s can fail and when they do they are not as easy to replace as a lamp. I’ve lost count the number of LED’s I've lost on Prolight par cans.

Surely it boils down to using the right tool for the job?
I i want to up/down light a set i would use a row of JT pixel line led battens but if i wanted to light a stage its tungsten all day long.
You cant really compare the two as they are so different.
In a disco environment pixel line, pixel pars are really good as are colour punches and colour blocks but for providing dance floor effects you would be hard pushed to find anything like a wizzard, mac 500 etc.....
Theatrical led is becoming very popular with certain tasks, with the introduction of EvenLed, cyc lighting is no longer a chore and doesn't require loads of coda battens.
For outdoor shows led's can be great especially under water for fountain systems etc, we recently used so really high-powered underwater leds and the look amazing, yet for shooting beams over a crowd in a show or stage environment led will never match the power and options of something like a VL3500.
So in a nutshell my disco rigs all use tungsten and discharge lamps depending on the size of the rig - some go out with pixel pars but thats the only led i use for mobile work.
