Signed up last week and had a half hour chat with Paul the owner......Please take the record of our conversation in the right spirit as it gives an interesting slant on what we do....

Paul is also a Wedding DJ.....He has built up his business and would be considered upper end of the Market pricewise on here.

Occasionally he pops to his local for a midweek Karaoke Night. He gets on well wth the Landlady who knows she can't afford Paul....and let on that she pays the lad who does it there only £60.00 a night.....your Archetypal Sid.....Maybe???

Except Pauls unsolicited parting shot to me was...

"The Karaoke guys a great bloke....he's even got his Insurance with me"

Moral of the story.....

"Just because somebody is going out cheaper than you....please don't consider him not legit."

How on earth he gets Tax,Pli,Pat Testing etc etc out of his £60.00 is a completely different issue

Just more LIKELY to not be legit! ;)

The answer is probably that he doesn't!

I base that opinion on the fact that (according to a forum poll) the average DJ has expenses of around £100 per gig.

and probably more importantly.....

If he charged anymore the Landlady wouldn't bother....

Because the turnover wouldn't support it:eek:

5 nights a week, 52 weeks a year at £60.00 is £15,600, take away expenses, say £500 per month, (£6,000) leaves £9,600. There are people in full time jobs doing less than that.

Who said he worked 5 nights a week then?

Sorry, I should have said "for illustation purposes" :)

Spending £50 a year on PLI hardly makes you legit.

PLI is not a legal requirement, anyway, so it makes no difference to your legitimacy whether you have it or not.

Although PLI makes no difference to your legitimacy, it's probably your own interests to have it, as some venues will refuse to let you play there without it...and if that happens, you won't necessarily always get a replacement booking.

I don't see how anyone can claim to be legitimate without having PLI tbh!

Totally agree, Rob, and I've always gone down the "Best Practice" road.

But when people are asking if someone's "legit" then PLI and PAT doesn't come in to it. My beliefs are that they should be legal requirements but I can't see that happening any time soon.

It also gives peace of mind, as you don't have to worry what you'd do if someone tripped over your gear & sued the :moon: off you!

I also think they should be legal requirements.

That would be a great first step in making many people in our industry more responsible & professional.

Because it's not a legal requirement. For you to be legitimate is for you to comply with the relevant laws of which, in our industry, PLI is not one of them.

I think external regulation is the way forward for us as service providers but, still, I can't see it happening in the near future.

Sorry, but...

BORING!

How many times do we need the same discussion?

Well you're going to have an uphill struggle...

And who is it that moans at people for posting in threads which they have no interest in?

:p

I saw this story, Vectis.

Looks like those in power are finally going to start using a bit of common sense, because some of the health & safety stuff is beyond belief at the moment.

It has nothing to do with that - this subject has come up again and again and again....with people saying the same thing.

Running a business without PLI can never be legitimate - you have a moral duty, if not a legal one to ensure that if you cause damage to the general public, that you are able to put things as right as possible, and don't bother arguing, because to not have cover for the public is just plain irresponsible, and you will never convince me otherwise. the whole reason for this forum to exist in the first place was to promote best practice and drag this industry into the 21st century, unfortunately it would appear that the whole thing is a complete waste of time and effort.

But the original post was not supposed to highlight the rights and wrongs of PLI... ....

It was meant to highlight that the smaller operator who may not have all the up-to-date equipment may in fact be better represented legally and morally. In fact because he doesn't have the latest equipment may mean that he puts PLI,Pat and Hector the Tax Inspector etc.....first!!;) ;) ;)

Though we've had our differences on related matters, there is no way anyone should be operating a Mobile Disco and taking money for it if he doesn't have PLI. Yes, I know, I've done a Volte Face on where I once stood, but I'd have to admit I was wrong. It can happen. :o :o :D :D :D

but it doesn't - its just an example of ONE person - you can't base anything at all on that.

But to be fair to yourself, you are right more times than you are wrong, and big enough to admit when you are wrong, and willing to act on it, which makes you a better human being in my eyes.
