Question for anyone using an LED message scroller.

Do you use one that is linked and controlled to a PC whilst it is scrolling (and if so do you have a dedicated PC for it), or do you use one that you can pre-program before the event and then leave it running solus for the event?

Yes - I use one for lots of non-formal events to great effect.

I have a series of pre-programmed messages that can be over-ridden either by a PC program or a handheld remote ("Happy Birthday Fred" or whatever).

Just about to sell my spare as it's only been out of the box about three times in two years... keep an eye on For Sale this afternoon. It's a really good long, thin, multi-coloured one ;)

I use one for quizzes, but otherwise I don’t tend to use one.
I control it via a laptop (not a dedicated laptop), the problem I found with the software mine uses is you cant see what the effect is, e.g. you can tell it to do something but you have to physically look at it to check it is doing the right thing.

I used to have a 30 quid job that stored a few messages and looked ok but I wish I had gone for a computer or remote controlled one to save messing about with the keypad on the unit itself.

i bought one with a remote and RS232 connection - alas the remote is impossible to fathom and the PC software I've lost  Only used it twice

Avoid the Cheapo £49.00 jobs that Cra:Censored: lins are selling. I made that mistake when I first started. Never again. But then again I'd have to be pretty desperate to ever buy anything from them again.

Everything I've ever bought from them I've had to take back for refund. Sorry going :offtopic:

i had one for a while, but found it a pain to program, even using the pc. The software often didnt link correctly to the scroller.
setting up with the remote control took forever. Mine went on ebay

I had one - thought it looked tacky and unprofessional so got rid of it.

I have 1 and use it only only occasionally, i find it is handy for certain events, like wedding fairs of charity functions..... where u can put the name of your disco and other such details discreetly amongst the other info relavant to the night.
