As you guys may well know Im going full time.

Now part of the plan is getting more work hence more contracts out, plus quizs and a few other bits and pieces.

Now my Inkjet HP does eat up the ink and naturally costs a fair wack. Im wondering if anyone can suggest a machine that they have worked with which prints what you think is acceptable for protential clients to see and also doesnt cost an arm and a leg in maintaince costs etc...

I have an Epson Stylus Photo R240. I can get 6 sets of cartridges for £15. The print quality is more than acceptable!

Neil,

I also have an HP inkjet printer, and there's a simple way to massively reduce your running costs without changing the printer.

Start buying your ink carts on ebay, and you'll save a fortune.

I'm not talking about re-filled, re-manufactured or cheapo equivilent carts, but brand new original HP carts that are in date.

For example, HP no 45 high capacity black ink carts are well over £30 in my local Staples, but the last one I bought from ebay was £9 (including postage). I usually pay around £8-£9, or sometimes even less.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

I found the quality was not the same, and it's a false economy when you can get original carts for a quarter of their shop price.

one make/model i cant recommend more highly is xerox phaser.
why bother with inkjet? go laser.

not cheap but worth the bucks in the long run.

I have an A3 version but the A4 ones are excellent.
costs me next to nothing to run!! you also get a top quality page every 2/3 secs.

have a look on ebay or go to a dealership.

HP Laserjet 1080.

It's only a mono printer but great quality black prints and the toner lasts for an unbelievable length of time

Very cheap too. :)

I recently treated myself to a Lexmark C734DN colour laser, mainly due to the amount of stuff Mrs VV pumps out as teaching resources but also because printerland.co.uk were selling them at virtually half price with a full set of toners - I paid about £280 I think.

It's VERY fast and produces rather excellent colour as well as nice crisp blacks. I'd previously sworn that a decent inkjet document was fine for business use, but side by side these things are a thousand times better looking and of course not subject to smudging and smearing. It sits on the LAN and takes print jobs from the macs and the windoze machines without any aggro.

I can now churn out a variety of documents that would have previously gone off to a print company - brochures, newsletters, business cards, the works.

Previously I was using a network-attached HP Laserjet 2200DN which ran forever and was cheap on toner and I thought the quality was good - but next to the Lexmark it's pish. I also ran a Canon MP610 multifunction inkjet for colour output. Wasn't impressed with it and it was always clogging up a needing a good clean.

Would you say having buying that printer quality aside that it is saving you money by having materials printed off on that printer rather than sending docs off to printers etc...?

One I have now is good but its the running costs that I want to address

Laser -vs- inkjet always comes down to volumes.

This thing costs about £450 for a full set of toners - but that's 28,000 pages worth (at 5% coverage) so that's 1.6p per page - plus an £80 fuser every 20k pages brings it up close to 1.9p per page. But that's virtually printshop quality.

My old inkjet cost around £7 or £8 for a compatible black which did about 500 pages max; so that's 2p per page for comparatively awful quality. Colour worked out at about 4 or 5p per page for normal documents, 10p for high density stuff.

Admittedly it's much easier to spring £7 every couple of weeks with an occasional £30 than £450 every year or so.

So it's horses for courses. I print a lot of proposals, reports, graphs and charts and Mrs VV lots of teaching resources and between us we get through a box of paper a month approx.

I'd never go back to inkjet.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread from the dead...but it never got past 2 pages, and weve a few new members.

Anyway...ive always been a owner of inkjet printers in one brand or another, Epson, Lexmark, HP etc etc.

Came across the Samsung ColorXpression CLP-320 (its a color laser printer) on eBay for £99 (including a full set of toners). Done a bit of research, toner is about £35 a pop, and imaging kit is the expensive bit at £90, but thought I would give it a go...after all when the toner runs out...I can but a nother full printer and toner off eBay ;)

Anyway...I'm never ever going back to inkjet!!! The crispness of the new printer, and quality of the print in general looks so much better...so anyone looking for a new printer...buy a Laser one :D

Im still using the same printer as I got some headed paper printer so all the printer does is print the text on top. If I was doing quiz nights and more karaoke then I would for sure get a laser one.

My Step-brother bought one a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised, it's actually alright despite being pretty cheap!

It's WiFi enabled as well, so you can print wirelessly :D

Since posting in this topic originally we have added a second hand HP laser printer in the office and its absolutely fantatsic.

Dirt cheap to run, has 3 trays so 2 for A4 and one for envelopes as well as doing duplex prints etc.

Toner was pretty cheap also and the HP just seems to go and go and go! Only downside is no colour but thats not really a problem.
