Hi

I am hoping other DJs have already done this and can give me some advice.

I want to take on a Trainee.

A neighbour's 17year old son is keen to learn the business.

At the moment I could offer to take him on the road 2 times per month for say £30-£40 a time. If he is upto the mark then from next year my plan is to take bookings for him, provide him with all the equipment and send him out working for me.

Can I get a grant to train him?
What are the legal requirements?

I have read a previous thread on this forum and discovered that I don't have to pay a young apprentice the Minimum wage.

While training would I have to pay NI for him? If I get him work would it not be as an agent and therefore not subject to NI etc?

I would treat him as on work experience and money is not formal but discretionary.

Once you get him jobs act as an agent and him self employed. Keeps you out of the NI and tax equation.

Agents have legal requirements.

I am sure Darren or Steve & Angela will tell you all about it.

Aren't they were multi-ops rather than agents?

I'm willing to bet they all know the regulations though.
