Does anyone use backup speakers?

Ive managed to backup most of my new kit apart from the speakers.

My thinking is if one speaker goes down i still got the others to play on. Unless they all blow!

The problem i have is space in my vehicle. Im currently using my 57 plate Astra Estate and im not going to have much room to play with.

Do any of you guys have backup speakers? I might just get a cheap set of 12" full ranges.

We jsut got some active 10" speakers off the bay for back up as space is also an issue for us.

Our backup will no consist of an american audio SDJ2 which will run directly to the active speakers ... if everything fails! should be able to run a gig off those until something else is sorted =]

Space is an issue for me too.

No my theory is that I run on Actives so if one goes I can get through the night on the other.

That coupled with 50% of my gigs being within one mile of where I live, means that I have quick access to another set of actives, should the very worst happen.

I carry spares of pretty much everything else, playout system, mixer, cables, mics, headphones.

I must admit, I have never taken backup speakers - everything else is backed up (amp, mixer, music, cables etc)

I carry a couple of spare mackies with me. Probably overkill but I enjoy the peace of mind.

In 26 years I've had just one occasion where one of my speakers popped its cone, and I carried on with the remaining speaker without much of a problem.

I used to carry a pair of 10" full range and a spare amp.

Now I have a pair of 15" full range and a spare amp sat in the lockup and a picture so that Mrs VV knows exactly what to bring. Given that the majority of venues are within a 7 mile radius it wouldn't take long.

Generally I run with two active Mackies and an active sub so I'm convinced it would need to be a very bad day that I made that phone call.

Me too. Only blew one once. The other coped for the rest of the night.

I have a spare amp, but would probably just run the night on one speaker. Saying that, I have bought some Warrior PSR8a which I am putting on the horns on the ultimax (as a bit extra). For the size of gigs I do I could just about get away with them if all else fails. Trying for the first time on Saturday.

I'm sure I read a post on the forum recently (I think it was Tony Scott?) where all of his speakers blew due to a fault. Although such circumstances are extremely unlikely and rare, it could still happen.

This has what has got me thinking about getting a spare set! Even if i keep them at home most of the time as most of my gigs are nearby. Also, if its a smaller venue it saves lugging the cd15 bass bins with me!

Even one little cheap powered speaker would do to get you out of a jam should the unthinkable happen.




I really don't get the "it's never happened in so many years so I don't bother" way of thinking. Now before you come back with a response I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm right...it's just that I 'don't get it'

I've never had a mixer fail, or amp fail or playout system fail but I always carry backups of those. I've never had the van break down on the way to a gig but I still have full breakdown cover. Surely the whole concept of backup is preparing for the unexpected, which by it's very nature will come at the least expected time. No?

I have 1x spare RCF cab thats identical to my main set if one speaker goes down my system is active anyway so i will still get sound from one speaker.

switch the broken speaker off and unplug the mains iec lead and xlr... take the broken speaker off the stand and put the spare one on plug in the mains iec and xlr and switch it on.

changed in a matter of seconds.

I have spare speakers at home...not much use when gigging though :D

In one of my flightcases, I do have a spare speaker driver and a couple of spare horn drivers though just in case. They only take about 1 minute to fit :D :D

Yes.
I had 2 x SRM45V1s and one blew a Tweeter at a gig a few years ago.
While it was being repaired a bought 2 x SRM450V2s - now I take all 4 with me just in case. The extra speakers are also handy for larger venues.

I carry spares of pretty much everything apart from speakers. It's pretty impossible to blow the mackies as they simply thermal out if you push them to hard. This has only happened twice in 6 years, and were both my fault for not taking subs!!!

Even if I had had spares with me, by the time I could have got them out of the van the mackies had cooled down and were working.

I guess we can only do so much!
