Hi all,
I posted a quickie yesterday with reference to the venue that I was at last night. Absolute nightmare to get in and out of and when I had finished setting up, it looked like I had been in the shower with all my clothes on!
Anyway, last night was a wedding and it was a really good one. Only about 60 guests in total and it was in a marquee on the lawn of a very nice big mansion house. When I got there around 20 minutes before I was due to start, the kids were playing football on the lawn, the background music was playing and the atmosphere was really nice.
It was one of those weddings where the guests were really up for a wide selection of music and quite a lot of people danced to everything for as long as they could (before having to get rehydrated). For the most part of the evening it was very light and you couldn't really see the Disco lights or Uplighting but around 9.45pm when it started to get dark, it was as if the whole marquee had been transformed as the colours all started to show up.
So...I have a semi full dancefloor and I am approached by a guy who asks "Hello mate, do you do requests?"... I tell him that I am always open to requests and if I have it, I will play it....(he asked for Bon Jovi 'Living on a Prayer'). He then stood around for a few minutes and said "I used to be a DJ"... I did the usual and said "Oh, nice...what did you do? Mobile? Club?" (when I really wanted to say..."What do you want...a medal?" **jokes**). He told me that he used to do Mobile work and gave up about 4 years ago as he didn't like the setting up etc and also that he had a bad back. It was small talk for a while but he was ok...pleasant enough and didn't come across as annoying as some people who do the "I'm a DJ" thing usually do. He stood around by the side of me as I cue'd up tracks and was interested in the equipment etc.... He did the usual thing and said "It was records and CD's when I was doing it" and was very interested in the Denon system. I talked him through how it worked etc and he genuinely seemed interested.
Anyway, it all lasted probably around 10 minutes but before he left he said a couple of things which I thought were really cool.
Firstly he said..."You're a natural mate. I did it for 20 years and wasn't as confident as you come across. You have them eating out of your hands"....and then secondly..."I'm glad I gave up when I did as I probably wouldn't get any work with you on the scene. I wouldn't be able to compete".
I thought that was really nice of someone to say that. I had never met the guy before and it made a hard day just that little bit easier.
Enjoy your day everyone!

It nice when people speak highly of what you do.
As for the "Im A DJ" tbh i dont mind people saying it to me. Ive had a few local djs come up to me. One of my mates Steve got married last night and he has another friend that does discos but he wanted me to do it.
I spent a bit of time during the night talking his other friend who's also a mobile dj as well. He come to speak to me during the night friendly conversation and that as you do.
A few months ago my mate Steve booked me to do a wedding. He knows me under Twinspin.
Now id spoke to Steves other mate who's a dj during the night. At the end of the night he asked me for a card and said. What are the chances that your available on 23rd july. Ive booked another company to my wedding. Ive heard their a good disco. But ive seen you and as a mate of Steves id prefer you to do it. I said to him which company is it you booked.
So he said. It was Hull Wedding Disco i booked to do it. So i started laughing as you do. I said to him seriously ive heard bad reports about them. So i hand him the card over and he looks at the card in shock. He said to me how did you get those cards. So i laughed and i said to him.
This is Hull Wedding Disco. So he says right i thought you was Twinspin thats what Steve told me. So he said.... Jesus christ its a small world.
So he said in that case your booked already.... Im glad its you.

Great post - proof that all x-Dj's aren't total idiots - that means it may be safe to retire (one day)!

John,
That is quite funny actually :)
It is having several names that can lead to confusion, I have seen it done before

I tend to leave other DJ's alone when they're working unless I have something constructive to add. I.e. I've got a request, or they're doing a really good job and I think it's worth telling them that - either way I don't normally start with "I'm a DJ too" as some people don't mind it (me included), but others get really narky :D If I think they're not doing too well I'll either give them requests to try and steer them in the right direction (if I know the crowd), or leave them alone. I personally don't think that criticising a nervous DJ before/during their performance is a good idea ;)

Why the sick bag and thumbs down comment?
I was wondering the same thing.
Have we missed something, Gary?

Why the sick bag and thumbs down comment?
I think it was aimed at Twinspin

I'm not bothered who it was aimed at Steve, just wanted to know WHY it was said as I think it was out of order personally.
I got told pretty sharply not to comment on a 'For Sale' thread a while back if I wasn't interested in buying what was for sale. At the time I had no idea that you couldn't make a comment.
I'm just wondering what the point of Diamond's post was so...maybe I am missing something too?

No it certainly wasn't aimed at Twinspin :(
To tell you the truth I'm sick to death of a certain person who keeps banging on how good he is and how good other people tell him he is it's getting boring, you don't get the top DJs on this site doing it , they don't need to blow their own trumpet and I'm sick of reading it :(

So, it was aimed at me then!!?
If this is the case then I honestly do not believe it. It will be yet another one of my threads that will more than likely be deleted and why?....because some people obviously don't like seeing others do well (that's how it looks).
If you're sick of reading it....ignore it. Don't post silly little comments like "Pass the sick bag"...act your age please.
For the record... The "Top DJ's" - Who would they be?
I don't blow my own trumpet either...I just say what happens at functions. It's a forum for goodness sake. If you don't like something, don't read it as you come across as stupid.
I'lll tell you what I'm sick of.... People just seeing stuff I write (and others too) as blatant winkle waving when it's nothing of the sort. If I can't actually write a positive report on something I have done without the likes of you having a moan then really, what is the point of joining in?

Gary,
I've noticed that when people post positive things about their business, everyone pats them on the back, unless their name is Gary or Rob, in which case they get moaned at for willy waving or accused of massaging their ego.
Ironically, I've ALSO been moaned at for making NEGATIVE posts! I've therefore come to the conclusion that everyone will be happy with my posts, as long as they're not positive OR negative!
I really do wonder about some of the people on this forum.

Rob,
I go on a number of forums mate. I started to post on a Mobile Disco forum shortly before I joined this one. I didn't like it at all. It was very 'nerdy' for want of a better word and someone from this forum directed me this way and for the most part, I enjoy it here. I have taken advice and tips on board from various people and it's been worthwhile.
The one thing that gets me down if the comments from certain people that either think I am aggressive, a trouble maker or I have the ego the size of a house. All of these assumptions are totally way off the mark. I don't sit there, writing my posts with the intention of narking people or showing off. I write them honestly as I think it's the best way to be.
The point of THIS thread was to highlight the fact that NOT all of the people that come up and say "I'm a DJ" or "I used to do a bit of DJing" are annoying. What happens? Someone uses it as an excuse to have a moan AT ME. Absolutely no need for it whatsoever. I have seen people making comments like Diamond's go into the Sin Bin but I doubt if that will happen.
I'm off out for a while...if you have a problem with me Diamond Geezer...get over it.

Sorry if anyone doesn't agree but I can't stand this kind of self trumpeting it's been going on for about 2 years now and I just had to say something.
I will not post on this thread anymore I think I've made my feelings clear enough.

Once again, we have people moaning how we run the forum and thinking they know better. So and so said this and they got sin binned etc...
It is our decision how we moderate and no-one elses and I don't appreciate remarks about how we do things.
Paul, there's no real need for your comments, just don't read Gary's comments or posts.
Gary, like it or not, you do post a lot of threads like this and there are always going to be people who don't like it. I have a lot of positive things happen to me, but don't always post them on here as it does look like showing off a bit. That's just the way it looks to some people unfortunately.
Rob, once again, you are sticking your nose into things that have nothing to do with you. Where did your involvement come from on this thread? Suddenly, it's all about you again and how you are persecuted. I suggest you don't get involved.

No problem, Darren.
I will therefore bow out of this thread & leave it for others to continue the discussion.

Right, here's my last post on this subject.
It seems to me that I can't do anything on here to keep people happy, interested etc etc...
Firstly, Darren...I was NOT implying or trying to influence Moderators into making decisions at all. You and your moderators run your forum how you see fit and I'm not arguing with that at all. I said I had seen people sin binned for similar comments (there was a guy the other week that suddenly had the urge to attack me online too and as I remember, Angela sin binned him so just a question but...isn't this the same?).
There are some people on here that come across as arrogant and big headed but do you know what I do?....I IGNORE their comments..simple as that really. I will not attack them just for the sake of it "because I just HAD to say something". NO!! you DIDN'T HAVE to say something! Who do you think you are!!??
Another point Darren.... I take it that Mr Diamond Geezer was referring to YOU and a few others as the 'Top DJ's' on here....nothing wrong with that at all but then I guess he gets some work from you being in Reading aswell? (just a guess?). I have actually met Diamond Geezer, albeit very briefly when he purchased some Dynarocks from me a while back. Funny really as he didn't look like he would harm a fly and was very pleasant. It's strange how some people can change into keyboard warriors as and when they feel like it.
Now, I'm only using this as an example but....What is the difference between my postings and the postings of set ups of say Tony for example?? No offence whatsoever as his photos are brilliant, as are the set ups but come on... What is the difference? Do some people look at those photos and think "He's 'self trumpeting' again" or "He's just a show off"... I don't think so! I think people look at them and are envious in reality and rightly so in my opinion. All I do is post what I think and what HAS happened. You lot already know that I have posted negatives too so what is going on here?
Darren, I understand exactly what you are saying but once again I am made to feel like I am causing trouble....when I am NOT. All I have done is post a report on a gig at the weekend and someone comes in and feels the need that they HAD to post an attack on me because they couldn't hold it in any longer. It really is disturbing if I annoy some people that much.
I am not going to say anymore on this. Thanks Diamond Geezer for spoiling it for me. I thought you'd have better things to do than attack someone that is doing well but if that floats your boat then fair enough. It doesn't bother me too much.
Rob, there have been times when we have disagreed mate but in my view, that's what forums are for....opinions. I have seen you get a hard time from people on here and sometimes I can see why but other times I think it's un-called for. It looks to me that both of us have been labelled by others and that's out of order. I think we're fighting a losing battle mate.
Everytime I get grief in this place, I say "S*d it..I'm not posting anymore" and then I get a number of private messages from certain people saying "No, don't stop...carry on, we enjoy reading your ramblings" (sorry if that's 'self trumpeting again Mr DG)...Well, if you want to ban me from the forum (I can't see why you would?), just because I post about my work then do it. It comes to something when you can't go on to a forum dedicated to the profession we are in, and post positive posts without others being envious, jealous, accusing you of being a show off etc....that's just sad.

Sorry Gary, but a lot of that post is complete nonsense.
No-one is making you feel like you are a troublemaker and no-one has implied that.
Read your last post. Once again you are saying that we should be doing this or doing that when it comes to moderation. It has nothing to do with you or anyone else. We don't need or want opinions when it comes to running the site.
Also, whether anyone works for me or not has absolutely nothing to do with this thread and I am not sure what you are implying there either. If you are saying that if people work for me, then I let them do what they want on here, then you are very very wrong.
If you want to team up with Rob in the "People are always ganging up on us" then fine. Rob is very good at doing that and getting people to side with him. I'd hate to think that you are doing the same..
And ban you from the forum? Why? Why would you even say that?
Thread closed as I am fed up with the bickering.

[not directed at anyone in particular]
Why should Gary have to think twice about posting incase somebody doesn't like that he's posting something positive?
Gary, ignore the negative comments. I've been one of the ones that's PM'd you in the past and asked you to carry on, and I'll do it publicly here too. It's damn refreshing to see someone posting positive posts when there's so much negativity in this business. You're one of my favourite posters and I look forward to your contributions here. Keep on carrying on. :beer1:
