Generators again!

Not the usual problem--this time working at Harewood House Leeds in a Marquee which I did not realise had one ( Generator)

This beast was a real biggie, way too big for a few lights in the MQ and my stuff.

When they started it I wanted to go home.:eek:

It was so LOUD and only a few yards from the stage outside the MQ.:bang:

It was impossible to play at low level while the guests arrived because the droning of this thing was completely ruining any enjoyment of the music.

Although I drowned it out later on as the evening went on it really was awful especially when I was on the mike giving people instructions, I think a singer might have said :Censored: that im not performing against that.

I ended up with a headache--which I never do normally:confused:

Anyone had a similar problem, there was no attempt to shield it or stop the noise carrying.

That's inexcusable, Alan.

An entertainment set should be of the silenced breed, also it's not difficult to do the maths using the dbA rating (normally @7m) to see how far away from the action the set should be placed.

Do you know what the set was/any pics? I wouldn't mind guessing either (a) it was an old construction set or (b) the feeder was too short to place the set at a decent distance from the distro or (c) there was some "convincing" reason given to do with earthing why it had to be so close... which actually is complete nonsense as supplementary rod/s can be applied (e.g. at the main distro) to a TT installation to extend the equipotential zone beyond that of the rod at the set.

All it takes is a little bit of thought, I bet the installer didn't bother to go listen INSIDE the tent. Placing a set close to a large tree trunk (on the opposite side) also works wonders to reduce unwanted noise.

Agreed. Most of the big ones I've worked off lately were virtually silent at more than ten paces.

I have got a wedding at the end of the month in a marquee at probably one of the smartest venues I will play at. It's on a huge private estate about 400 acres and I have been informed that there will be a marquee and a generator being used.

I'm not too familiar with generators and wondered if anyone could suggest things I should look out for? I have also been informed that the first choice dj has let them down (meaning I wasn't first choice for this event) and I'm thinking why has the other dj has let them down for such a posh event - could it be to do with the generator?

I'm more used to entertaining in fixed marquee's at venues where they have already got power points fitted etc but do all temporary marquee's tend to use generators? I can't recall ever doing a temporary marquee! I have already suggested to the client that she speaks to the venue about any other means of powering my equipment for backup purposes mainly. I hate the word generator as what happens if it fails?

There's also band with me on the night and I got all-sorts of visions now of the generator failing with the evening coming to a standstill and the generator being a noisy one like has been mentioned in this thread.

Should I have concerns about generators and can anyone give me some advise and suggestions of anything I should do ot look for prior to the event or on the day itself? Sorry - hope I haven't hijacked this thread! :eek: :D :beer1:

This year I have done a number of Marquee functions (mostly weddings) and on every occasion, the generator has been a fair distance away from the Marquee. The one on saturday that I did was around 400m away (but I think that was down to the owners of the estate not wanting their precious lawn ruined.

I remember doing a marquee job a few years ago in deepest Suffolk.

They had a giant of a generator that was really noisy, but they had the sense to place it about 400ft away from the marquee.

Which was great, until I offered to shut it down at the end of the night, instead of the client waiting an hr or so at the end of the night for me to pack up, so I turned it off and then realised that I was in complete darkness, :o

no torch (& this was back in the day when your phone had a hi tech LCD display and no flashlight app for your iphone).

Funnily enough i've never offered to shut one down at the end of a gig since....

Thanks for the thoughts Tony, for the query over upcoming work might be worth enquiring how far away the Jenny will be--I was completely gobsmacked that at such a prestigious event would be so poorly serviced--got the Yorkshire passport at the border around Donny Peter;)

How can I put this delicately? :confused: Tricky this, cos I've got mates in Hull.

It's one of the few cities in England where every approach road is tree lined. It has a Marina where the Yuppies live with their yachts. It has museums, art galleries, a shopping centre on stlits, and a world class football stadium.
