Need help with sound and light package (please read!!)

Hi everyone,

I need some expert advice on a few things.

I m about to order a sound and lights package for a new mobile-dj business (not uk based). But i m ordering the stuff from a uk dealer.

Basically my audience is usually 28-40 yo (weddings or private parties).

I cant decide between two different speakers :

The ELECTROVOICE FORCE I's (250 watts RMS per speaker, wooden cabin, black carpet, 15" woofer) or the little more pricey series Sx100's (200RMS, 12" woofer) or the Sx300 (12" woofer, 300RMS, plastic cabin).

Theres a considerable difference in price between the Force series and the Sx's.

EV UK says that sound wise there isnt much difference between the two. Just the 12" woofered (sx series) is a little more "punchy". Plus its a bit lighter (13kg vs 20kg per speaker). But they did suggest the force series with subs (i cant get subs though).

What do reckon? Which speakers should i get? Anyone familiar with EV speakers?

I m also thinking of powering 4 of these 250RMS babies with either a QSC amp (GX5 - 700 WATTS PER CHANNEL) or a CERWIN VEGA CV 2800 900 WATTS PER CHANNEL) or a CROWN XLS 602 D (600 WATTS PER CHANNEL).

Which one of these amps is more reliable/clear sound and has more "beef"?

the budget for lights is about 450quid and the dancefloors are usually 6m x 6m

I could either get a Martin EFX600 effect or the following gear :

ACME DYNATWIN 250
ACME DYNAROCK 250
ACME LED TANGO MOONFLOWER
1 T-bar stand.

Which package is better for such a crowd? The EFX or the other one?
Should i split the lights into two stands for better coverage (instead of one)?

Is there some other inexpensive light that could add "fun" on the dancefloor? Is a smoke machine advisable for such a crowd?

Last question for the amp : Plastic 19" Rack case or proper flight case?

Hey ADJ, welcome on-board ;) :)

Yeah, I've heard of both EV and Cerwin Vega and both model's offer unprecidented quality of sound but I think if you wan't big bass, Cerwin Vega all the way :lol:

Lighting wise, I'd definetely recommend either a T bar or why not look for something more classy like trussing :cool: The Acme stuff is really quite nice and affordable but why not save up a bit more and buy yourself some LED light's instead because that's the way things are shaping at the moment, a lot of people are opting out for LED lighting because there's quite a few different advantages over that of discharge and halogen based disco lighting. LED disco lights 1) last a lot longer 2) no duty cycle, work's 24/7! 3) Far less power consumption.

I can highly recommend the EV Sx300 which I use when I'm subbing for another operator. We also use the 200's for pub karaoke and the sound is really good. And the weight of the cabs is a big advantage.

As for the lighting, I quite like the LED Tango but only when used in pairs (ie 4 moving patterns) and also when combined with other effects. I don't think you get enough coverage from one unit.

2 x acme matrix or 2 x American DJ Revo 4 DMX LED Effect (which one do u reckon is better?)

plus
1 x dekker
1 x equinox nimbus laser

the 2 effects will be each side of the t-stand and the dekker + laser in the middle

what do u think?

yeah, i think a truss with 3-4 led effects would be cool. I like the stuff from americsn dj, like the Revo4, dekker, dual gem, etc. Does anyone know about their reliability issues? My local KAM dealer wasnt very fond of them.

As far as the amp. The set is going to be a 4 x 250RMS EV satellites (force i series). The amp options are either a QSC GX5 2x700 @4ohms, a cerwin vega 2800 (2x900 4ohms) or a KAM KXR2000 (2x1000 @4).

the QSC has really nice features but i dont know if 2x700rms @4ohms is enough for 4 250rms EV's.
