Denon DNX 900 "popping"

Last night during the sound check about a minute or so into the track there was a very loud "POP" (not music before there's any sarcastic comments ) and it all went very quiet Everything was still on, the hd2500 still playing the track and the mixer still on but no sound

So I turned the mixer off and then on and all was fine again for about another minute or so then again "POP" and it all go's quiet.

I gave it one final try but again halfway through the track "POP" and nothing. I managed to see what the mixer was doing this time and as it went "POP" all the leds shot up to red and then straight back down.

As per the other thread I went to back up kit and got through but am uber stumped as to what it could be.

Never had this issue with my denon. Have you tried it since using a different power source?

Look on the Denon forum. Somewhere in the wilderness that is my brain, a little grey cell is telling me I've read about this before. :confused: :confused:

Never had this issue with my denon. Have you tried it since using a different power source?

To me, this sounds like spikes in the power source.

I ommitted to add power conditioners would "clean" the AC power before it reached your gear if an inverter wasn't viable.

UPDATE TIME!


Ok, after hours of testing and processes of elimination it's defo a mixer problem.

I ran it as it was run on saturday using the same power block all same connections etc and it ran for about 6 minutes then went "pop". Firstly changed the power input ie: took it out of the 4 block that it go's in in the flightcase and plugged directly to the wall. This time lasted about 4mins and "pop".

Thought it may be a problem coming from the 2500 so disconnected this and just went with an ipod......approx 4 mins later "Pop" so I'm concluding it's the mixer.

Just to double check the playout end I connected the 2500 to the Behringer mixer I had out on saturday and it's been playing away happily to itself for about an hour now.

So hopefully my local electronics shop will be able to sort it.

I'll let you know the diagnosis.

It only has one input source for cd/tape

Now as this is a vocal mixer there's no cue facility :Don't quote me, but there will be a button marked PFL

Pre Fade Listening. That's your cue facility. Don't ask me to explain it, cos I don't understand all the bells and whistles on my Berry, but I'm convinced it will do that.

I have that on my desk. Its a Eurorack version. Its what I used on all my discos too. So can work fine. :D

PFL stands for Pre Fader Level and is usually the button you press to hear the sound through the headphones in order that you can cue the track and check the sound level of it by hearing the volume level and, if the mixer has one, viewing the level by the PFL level meter. Some mixers just call it a "cue" button.

The "popping" problem sounds like a dry joint, loose component or defective component that works fine when its switched on but as soon as it starts to get warm, breaks a circuit, cools when its switched off so works again for a while until it starts getting warm again.

Ok, the latest news is......


Having just spoken to the repair shop they say it no longer "pops". Apparently on inspection there were some clamps missing that hold some components in place and these have now been sorted :confused: :confused:

It's currently being bench tested and has been on most of the morning. Their concern now is that it's getting quite hot. I'm pretty sure they do by default get quite hot anyway and told them this but they're waiting to hear back from Denons tech dept.

The front plate on mine on the left hand side gets hot enough to be very uncomfortable to touch for more than a couple of seconds and would result in a burn if you held your hand on it for a while after a nights work.

I believe it is normal. Must be a transformer there, or something similar.

That was my thinking aswell. Have to wait and see what Denon say.

my DNX1500 gets really hot and almost to the point its too hot to touch. Its been like this since day one and its been the main PO since Jan2008. Never had one issue with it.

Peter has just reminded me that I didn't tell you all what the problem was.

When it got taken apart it appears that the small metal clamp which hold the components in place on the front side of the mixer had become loose and one was actually missing :eek:

So when the unit got warm it couldn't use the outer cover as a heat sink like it should do and the components were heating up to the point of thermal cut out.

Since it's been reseated and fixed in place this has cured the problem. So it may be worth checking your screws if you have a similar mixer.

Glad to hear it's sorted. It appears to me then, that with Winter coming on, I need a mixer like that, and a pair of Penmare's Toasters, and I won't feel the cold as much. ;) :D :D :D

Maybe it depends on the make of the mixer , I'm sure I've used a mixer that had a Pre Fader Listen facility...

Sorry for digging up an older thread but I was reading up on Denon DN-X900 mixers , got one today (cased - with a Citronic CD-4S) for £150 :ner:
