How to work out mileage

Morning all :D

OK, I need a little help here please basically I am going through how much I should ask for when getting a booking. What I am stuck on is how to go about charging for mileage if outside my local area, should I charge extra? should I charge if it's X amount of miles over a set distance (if that makes sense lol) can I charge? should I not charge as I have just started up again?? ooooooohhhh I'm getting confused.com here:confused: help!!!!

The way I work mine is the first 10 miles are free, then I charge a set fee per mile (charged one way)

I don't charge extra for mileage within my home county, which could be anything up to about 30 miles.

A number of discos seem have a set formula such as xx per mile over xx miles etc. However, most websites I've seen don't state whether this relates to the total distance travelled or the radius from their base, so I think it's all rather confusing.

I rarely work outside my home county, but when I do, I don't use any formulas...I just come up with a figure to add to my normal package price.

It's just the way it's worded, and is easier to calculate in my head. I calculate one way but the additional fee charged covers all the distance covered, time involved in travelling, and wear and tear etc.

When quoting for a gig if needed i explain that i am charging x ammount for travel expenses,and the client normally understands.

As shuan explained i also just charge one way.

Charging for travel is OK if you have enough work that you can aford to lose work to DJ's that are more local to the client. If you have no work on a certain date then it may be wise to be competative if you want to work on that date and whilst your building up a clinet base. On the other hand if you travel and don't charge could get yourself into a "he'll do it for this price" cenario and find yourself travelling to that area on a regular basis as the word gets around.

I think it's a personal thing as to whether you charge travelling or not.

I always ask for a post code of where the event is taking place and I make a decision on how much more to charge. Distance only works if you work it out going via roads as you might not be going in a straight line towards your destination if that makes sense

Cheers folks for all your comments etc I think I will not charge for travel at the moment thus i can build up my base<hoops prays to the gods> :)
