On August 1st I have an audition with a band looking for a front man, spotted the advert on Gumtree http://glasgow.gumtree.com/glasgow/99/60156599.html and thought I'd fire an email at them along with the youtube link of the Weller cover I put on here.

Well they got back to me saying they were sufficiently impressed and would like me to pop along to Berkley 2 Studios in Glasgow http://www.berkeley2.co.uk/ and audition for them. I have to learn 4/5 songs from thier setlists, sing them and see how I go.

They made it clear they only want to do a few quality gigs a year but rehearse every Sunday (so won't hopefuly make an impact on my business, which comes first obviously), I'm quite into giving this a blast :D Now to choose 4/5 tracks from their setlist, some of which are beyond my capabilities and I did reiterate that to them, to which they said they're open to some changes.

Just a bit of chat lads, thought I'd let you know :) Any suggestions or choices on the 4/5 tracks would be a bonus.

Set 1

• Vertigo ( U2 )

• Hammer to Fall ( Queen )

• Long road to ruin ( Foo Fighters )

• She talks to angels ( Black Crowes)

• Sharp Dressed man ( ZZ Top )

• Rosalie ( Thin Lizzy )

• Gimme some lovin ( Thunder version)

• Whole lotta Rosie ( AC/DC )

• Wheels ( Foo Fighters)

• Hard to handle ( Black Crowes )

• Are you goin my way (Kravitz)

Set 2

• Riff Raff ( AC/DC )

• Love you more than Rock n Roll (Thunder)

• Gimme Shelter (Thunder version)

• Danni California

• Dancin in the moonlight (Thin Lizzy)

• Creep

• Dakota

• The Lemon song ( Zeppelin )

• Times like these ( Foo Fighters )

I felt the same tbh but I suppose it would be difficult to love every tune on a setlist, Thin Lizzy I'm a big fan of, Chilli Peppers, Foo Fighters do some great stuff :D

Cheers Shaun, means a lot mate :beer1: :D I think Dakota and Dancin in the moonlight will be 2 of my choices also.

Just what I was thinking.

There's only one person who know which ones you'll be happiest singing & which ones will best suit/show off your voice.

Good luck!

The choices part of the post was just to make it somewhat retorical and for me to see what, if any at all, tracks you like from the set lists. Obviously I'll be choosing the ones that best suit my voice. Thanks for the well wishes though, I'll let you know how I get on for sure.

Rosalie and The cowgirl song are variations of the same song aren't they? and then the lemon song.

You've got nowt to lose mate go for it:beer1: :beer1: :beer1:

I certainly haven't mate, far from it ! :D

I think Rosalie was done by Bob Seger first, not sure about the Cowboy song.

Nothing to lose indeed and will get me a better social life as a n00b to Gods own country. :p :beer1:

Yeah you're right Mark but cop a listen to the two tracks on their Live album Live and Dangerous. The cowgirls song is a variation on a theme to Rosalie the cowboys song:beer1: :beer1: :beer1:

If your Weller cover is anything to go by, I'm sure you'll do very well indeed, Mark.

Having heard your voice, the tracks I'd go for are:

Vertigo
Sex On Fire
Long Road to Ruin
Hard To Handle
And probably either Danni California or Creep.

My audition was moved to next Sunday, I chose Dakota as one of the tracks and recorded it earlier.

Its pitchy I know and maybe I've bitten off a bit more than I can chew with this one, just wanted a little bit of feedback from you guys/girls if possible. It's the first time I've ever sung this and remember it's only a hobby ! :o

IF you had the choice would you rather earn your cash doing 2 x 45 minuites sets as Cabaret......OR ......4 hours playing other peoples songs!!(assume for this exercise the cash is similair)>>

If I were you I would be using my contacts to slowly introduce myself to the Cabaret Scene(more as an individual than with that band...that set list is garbage by the way......)

Its a natural progression for you....singing to backing tracks :) :) :) :)

Only heard your Weller cover, Mark - can't watch the new one on this PC BUT
I rate your voice absolutely mate.
Think you should absolutely sing songs that you're already most familiar with.

If you need to impress, I'd chose the following for these reasons:

Vertigo - will show off ability to sing notes powerfully yet clearly/purely.
Hard to Handle - rapid verse will highlight breathing technique and your growl!
Sex on Fire - Will highlight you ability to hold powerful notes
Are You Gonna Go My Way - lots of opportunity to stylise and show you panache as a front man. :-)

Am I missing the sarcasm here?
4 hours with a band? Most likely 2x 60mins max, surely
IMO the whole point in being in a band is the energy and the company.

And there's a lot more pressure on you stood by yourself.

Unsure if you could in Glasgow area, but I couldn't do all-rock set in a cabaret venue.... I often feel like I've utterly sold out every time I have to sing the usual cabaret fare. Although I've not lowered myself to covering Penny Arcade yet, thank God.

Go for it Mark! Break a leg and let us know how it goes.
(You can always suggest to add some different (better?) songs to that set list once you're in!)

(Mind you, prepare to feel slighted every time someone starts slagging off live acts on the forum.... )

Wasn't being sarcastic.....I was trying to illustrate the difference between what Mark could do with his voice....i.e be a turn like yourself.....OR ...A DJ...
(PLAYING OTHER PEOPLES SINGING).It won't be popular ...but I know what I'd rather be.....;) ;) ;) ;)

Sorry fella - completely misunderstood your post! Thought you meant solo 90mins vs band for 4hours! :bang: NOTE TO SELF: Must Engage Brain Before Posting.

Absolutely, it's a different kinda buzz you get from being "a turn", but it's not all fried gold!

I'd say it's a more intensive performance and the highs/lows are more extreme than when DJing only (at least I've found.) Times "on site" are not hugely different, and (perhaps) prep ahead can be a little longer. (Especially if you've not been doing the same set since 1985.)

It's not really comparing apples with apples, but we ARE all in on the same fruit stall! ;-)

MARK - any time you wanna chat through live work/singing related things, welcome to drop me a PM. I'm hardly a guru, but will tell you what I can! (I pick the brains of other artistes I know all the time.)

AND I gotta say to all, I wish a good few more of the live guys n gals would join this forum or one like it. I have picked up so many tips to make my presentation better, learned things I can do differently and how to make working with separate DJs easier, so many tips and tricks and more ....

oh, and I'm learning to improve as a DJ/Businessman too...not sure if y'all knew the forum did that too! ;)

Cheers Jonny :D , it's more just for the crack of being in a band than for the money, the guys in the band are older than me, in their 40's I think but I'm told told they're pretty tight as a band. Just a few quality gigs a year they want which suits me. (If they like me :) )

Here's another track they asked me to learn on top of the others, I recorded it, any critisism welcome :) You'll all be sick of me posting tracks by now :p I put it on facebook but chickened out and removed it :o

Well done Mark! Pleased as punch for you mate.

And, as you're a brother of the order of the forum too, that's another of us to proselytise The Word according to the Gospel of Saint DJ, to all those other hethen live acts.

"And yea, tho' I walk through the valley of tangled cables,
Thy gaffa tape is with me, thy mic-stand is my rod and
velcro straps my guide.

Never stalt we set up late, nor steal all the sockets,
nor for borrowed mic leads petition, nor every sausage roll scoff down.
At gigs end, a full dance floor we shalt not smyte by packing down early
and yea, we shalt go forth with great rejoicing to impart
Our set list in good time unto the DJ

For the couples is the glory, and ours but an honour
From set-up to pack-down
Amen."
