The dangers of not using proper equipment came home to roost last night to one of our most experienced DJs.

Mike Moore, who many of you know, used a chair last night to reach some lights. On getting down he fell and as a result has broken his leg in 4 places and his wrist.

He's looking at 3-6 months on crutches once he's had surgery in the next couple of days.

So, apart form letting you all know of his plight, the warning is - use the correct gear when setting up and packing down. This doesn't include standing on chairs!

If you use a ladder, no matter how short, stand straight up and never lean to reach to either side or backwards or forwards.

I always take a little step ladder with me which is very sturdy and never use a table or chair to stand on.

Good stuff and always remember that it might seem like nothing at the time, but don't lean to put lights up or down, move the step-ladder each time.

This makes me wonder how many people use the even safer option of a winch lighting stand? I've got a strange feeling it won't be that many.

Thats a warning for the people that posted in a thread the other day and said they use the venue chairs for assisting them in hanging lights.

I'll certainly be even more careful that I already am when standing on chairs at venues in future.

I have to wonder why on earth you would need to get on a chair for any reason?

If its for lights then the standard lighting bar isnt that high off the ground? anything higher and I get the winch truss in?

In large venues my Powerdrive stands go up to 15ft and I have a small step ladder to get up to the top. I have found the good quality winch stands to be expensive, I have read horror stories about the cheaper ones callapsing. A winch stand would be a luxary for me but I would sooner spend the money on other things as I dont have that many lights to justify a winch setup.

I know what you mean Neil, but there are events where I have to get my Coloured Lights higher than normal because of some obstruction and get on a chair or speaker to adjust them.:eek:

Not that I would encourage this behaviour but another fine benefit of the Ul15's is that they would take my weight easily should such an event happean.

Of course you understand that Ive never tried this..................................

No he was packing down afterwards. Just as well really, although he was not actually DJing, just working as a sound and lighting engineer for a play at his daughter's school.

I have to admit to not using chairs to stand on to hang lighting. The reason being that I am somewhat afraid of heights (yes, even low heights if that makes any sense). It's not the height matter that concerns me - it's the falling and hitting the ground! I actually get quite dizzy looking up to change a lightbulb in the house! :eek:

Even putting up christmas dex requires a safety rope and harness!

I hope he isn't feeling too bad. He must have got tangled with the chair on falling or landed on something awkwardly to do that amount of damage.
