A nice moment from downloading songs at the gig

There's been recent discussion about whether you would download a song at your gig. I do it quite often if I don't have a track and I think it'll work well.

Tonight was one of these occasions. I was approached by the granny of the bride during the background music and she asked me if I could play her favourite song for her later on. I said I would. I was absolutely positive I had the song she wanted, but when I looked it wasn't there. A quick visit to iTunes, a few pence later and the song was on it's way (gotta love venues that have WiFi).

I played the track later on and the granny and her husband got up to dance, they were the only two people on the floor but were dancing cheek to cheek grinning from ear to ear as they danced. When the song finished she came over and gave me a big hug and thanked me for 'making her evening'

Now, I could have just let her know I didn't have the track and she may have been a little disappointed and I would have just carried on with the night. But by taking the time to download the song for a few pence it really made someones night, and seeing the joy in the old couples faces kind of made my night too.

Shaun, well done. Apart from the itunes bit, I agree with every word of that. Sometimes people seem to forget we're a service industry.

It's one of the biggest bonuses I've found to going digital, the facility to download tracks at a venue, especiallu if it has WiFi. The way 3 are improving their coverage at the moment, there aren't many venues where you can't get a signal. ( apart from last night's :( )

The fact that you "quite often" download tracks at gigs suggests that there's a fair amount of stuff which you don't have but think you need, and last night was an example of that.

If I was in your situation & quite often needed a track I didn't have, I'd also sort out the facility to download music at gigs & start doing so. However, in the two years since I've been digital, I honestly can't think of one occasion where I wished I had the facility to download music, which is why I have no plans to change anything.

Having checked my music collection, that track is not one of the seventeen Perry Como songs in my collection, but fortunately this lady was at your gig & not mine.

I'm glad it worked out well & you were able to make her day.

Totally agree Shaun. happened to me last week. Was asked for Rose garden by Lynn Anderson and Que se ra Doris Day. Yes I Know most mobile jocks will probably have these. In fact I found Que se ra the next morning:bang: :bang: But just Plugged the dongle in, logged on to Amazon 5 mins and £1.20 later. Two peoples night had been made. Four if you include Mary and me:D :D :D :D

But I do have Andy Williams' version as well as Tony Bennet.

First Dance song was Michael Jackson - I Just Cant Stop Loving You.

For some unknown reason to me, I had incorrectly tagged this particular song and although tagged "Michael Jackson - I Just Cant Stop Loving You" it was a completely different Michael Jackson Song... Luckily I went to cue it up 15 mins before the First Dance, and realised the error, to my complete horror.

After nearly losing the plot, downloaded via Amazon and saved my bacon.

I've never found a wrongly tagged song, but when I've made up the playlist for each gig, I always listen to the first dance, just to make sure it IS the song it's meant to be & that the file is ok.

Access to venue Wi-fi I find is pretty patchy although I did use it once to download a song that was mentioned and then sung (very badly) during the speeches to rapturous applause that then went down a storm later in the evening.

I may have to get a USB dongle, any recommendations for a PAYG jobbie of does anyone know how to hot-wire my BlackBerry to act as a modem for the laptop as I have an unlimited data tariff?
