Quick set ups

Following on from various recent threads on the subject of "quick set ups" I'm seriously looking at having a couple of the KAM type par bars as an option for a quick simple set up.

Is anyone else planning or has gone down this route already?

The main thing that's putting me off is that I would feel that my clients aren't getting value for money as they'd pay the same price wether it was the overhead bar with 5 lights or 2 T PAR bar type affairs.

If thats the case then I wouldnt be happy with it at all.

Maybe prewiring a lighting bar neatly would be my perferred way of saving time.

Of course if you know its a small room where those par can effects would do a good job and the 5 would be overkill then thats slighty different..

The loom is pre done but still have to physically attach the lights to the truss. Don't want to be leaving the lights permanently attached to the bar and just leave it in the van....that's got drama written all over it :D

Although I dont have to use such a Professional look as you ( im more rustic) I now use a bank of 4 prewired PAR56 type floods bolted to a bar( no flaffing around with wing nuts) which go into a professional flight case and just need putting on to a an upright stand with one connection to the controller plus a separate T bar with 5 effects( not permanently on the bar) on it plus 2 floor standing Dynatwins.

Its faster for me than rigging a DJ stand which now lives in Yorkshire;)

Its sometimes useful with difficult shaped rooms to move the light stands into different parts of the room. i.e Colours at front, main lighting effects down the side of the room. obviously there are safety and h and s issues to consider though.

I get a fair few as im always playing a different venue every night.

I did this recently and it was surprisingly effective, also now in the habit of not necessarily having speakers in the conventional line up i.e. cabs either side of the stand/ dj centre--but moving one further down the room ( watch the speaker cables) which as well as giving spread of sound helps me with feedback as im not constantly talking right in front of a loud speaker ;)

Since I started to use just 2 lights (about 2 years ago now) instead of 4,6 or 8 that I used to use nobody has said anything negative about it mate so I wouldn't worry too much about the customer.

You can even sell it as being different to other DJ's and "fitting into the theming of the room etc".

Its pretty much accepted that clients don't really care what lights we use as long as there are some and that they aren't mega cheap and tacky. Do whatever is easiest for you, I wouldn't go back to using loads of lights for normal weddings / parties ever again.

That one trip from the car park and an active PA can cut 75% off your set up.

I put my tbar in one massive box on wheels and everthing else goes on top of that - also helps with security as im not tooing and frowing which limits a tealeaf's chances.

I pre-wired a T-Bar (pics on link below) for weddings I've been using 2 datamoons where the laser and ImpossiLED are.

Just thinking out loud but rather than the KAM par bar route I might try a similar type thing with my ADJ Mega panels ;)

All looks a bit heavy for a Quick set up if you are on your own and the entry is difficult or upstairs.

All depends on the venue/access/timing/client/function. No hard and fast answer, except that it might be very nice to have quick setup available as an option on occasion.

Personally my standard rig is three panels, and four LED barrels. Unless I were to use two Virusators and one or two barrels, I couldn't cut it down much, especially as the loom is prewired now.

thats why i bought an ez access ramp. goes straight up. Really great for smaller steps etc. up to about 1m high.

I must be lucky as i hardly ever get stairs as 90% of my venues are purpose built for functions. When i do though with help it only adds about 10mins extra. There is always a porter or bar staff member willing to skive off for a bit.

just carry flight case up and put the stuff on it then. I charge £30 extra for venues with stairs though. :)

It's something I have been looking at- what can you do with 1 heavy duty tbar.
I'm also splitting out my playback flight case as its a 2 man lift at the moment.

Only bit I havent sorted out is where the mirror ball would go...

Been operating in West Dorset For 45 years and most the mobiles are a close knit family we share work and pass on work to each other we talk and help each other out as it happens to be a rural area as there,s not many of us.
So i feel my statement has good knowledge of what is going on in my area.

Quite a bit--two LED effects, two Moonflower effects and a small laser effect.

Works for me.

No way. they always seem happy to help.

Its only really the big box i need help with everything else goes up in three trips or so. When no one is around i take the bits out of the case.
The active set up takes out two trips so i sometimes opt for that as its two speakers rather than four and an amp rack. :)

the charge is OK as im normally in in one go. big stairs quadruple the time.
