CD Player Laptop??

Just wondered what people thought the pro's and con's are for using cd players or laptops sorry if it has been covered before in previous posts.
I used cd players because I have loads of cd's, and laptops can freeze on you, just stop etc,etc.
I know cd players can mess up too, but thats why we have back up well some of us (well back up players) :blush:
From past experiences and talking to other dj's cd players seem more reliable.
Thoughts please?

Yes they can freeze but i have had one now for 2 years and never let me down,i play some of my music through it,Led Screen and a dmx deck for my lights.In that time i have used 2 cd players.

For the record Ive used a laptop week in week out for the past two years and never one issue. Most people who Ive heard say laptops crash are the ones that have never used them for DJing purposes

Never had a laptop problem in 5 years, except when I did something stupid and had to call Carol at home (she was looking after Mum who has alzheimers and son was not around) to sort it over phone.

I could do something daft with any kit in the right mood. :D

I've had cd players go :Censored: up on me more often.

ive used a laptop for nearly 7 years now but finding im taking my cds more often than not now. sometimes its nice to just look for a track rather than "searching". keep finding some forgotten gems.

I went digital a few months ago on the Denon HD2500. Finding it so much easier. Just need to get my backside in gear and get more music on it so can reduce the boxes of CD's I am also carting around.

Will always carry two boxes of CD as back up even with the HD2500.

Edit: I suppose I'd better be serious. Most successful Laptop DJ's have stripped down the machines to the bare essentials, and use them for DJ'ing only, nothing else.

Indeed Peter, its vital I think to have a laptop just for your djing controls. With the music database on the same drive you dont want your machine working overtime to run other apps too.

Yep...Ive a stripped out laptop. With Serato, and a few other porgrams, if the program crashes/freezes/whatever, it continues to play the track to the end. Ive only ever had this happen once, and i was beta testing an update in my local residency. Quick change over to a cd, and Ctrl/Alt/Del and end program, then restarted and all was well.

Now you mentioned that reminded me.

Having used my denon dns 3500's for my first year I remember twice where it just stopped mid song for no reason.

Now considering laptop hasnt had any such events in its 2 years of being used says it all really.

Naturally I carry back up so if it happeaned again I should have music on again within ten seconds.

If you get a laptop.... get some decent software to run on it.

And dont forget ProDub...or the way round it which im doing is to keep using the CDs for the old material, and download direct to external harddrive for new stuff you puyrchase. In time the CDs will be completely replaced and i wont have needed the ProDub licence. :) ... although £100 for 1-1000 isnt exactly daylight robbery. ;)

I had a similar mindset to your OP before using it but.........
All of your musical database at the touch of your fingers means you can change songs to suit the dancefloor much quicker and when I get to a gig and had a scan around of the crowd I go through my music collection early doors as add songs that I think will work to the playlist. Then later on I can play them or avoid them if they arent the way to go.

I got so fed up of driving home and thinking "oh I should of played such and such a tune that would of been perfect"

Even with my fading reflexes, it doesn't take long to push every fader up to the top, and hit play on everything within range. :D :D :D :D

Ten seconds being the worse case scenario yes. I usually have a song all ready to go so should be good to go within a second or two.

Thats why you should use a media player.
