No not because im in the s-bin :(

I am standing in a room two hours in to a wedding and they have not even had first dance yet (hence being on here).

Buffet just been served so yet another 3/4 delay :(

By the time I get going they will only have an hour or so left.

I think the families fell out earlier and they are chilling
They have a casino too keep them occupied so thats good.

Lets hope people do not all go home at 11 (being a friday).

I am going to work my socks off and really do my best :)
May do half an hour extra at the and if I have time.

Indeed.

If things are running late, it's not your fault.

In my opinion, anyone who does an extra hour for free needs their head examined.

Personally I wouldn't mind playing extra time (venue willing) if it helped end the night on a high for the B&G and their guests - I'd feel proud that I changed what could have been a lack lustre end to someones big day to a party to remember. But saying that, I've packed up dead on time in similar circumstances where it was obvious nothing would help recover the night - it all depends on the situation.

I probably do - but not just for that :daft:

Don't agree........might make you look good but what about the staff?

Do they not want to get home?

I was hoping saying 'venue willing' in my post covered that - but very valid point that the staff might not be given a say in the matter if it's been agreed over their heads with the manager. The only occasions I can remember it happening with me are where the bar has been closed and there's been no tidying up to be done until the morning (marquees) - hopefully no one was made to do an extra hour when they really didn't want to on those occasions.

Chances are there's very few venues where you'd get the opportunity to play much longer than a few minutes over time anyway.

They are open till 12 anyway and i was booked to0 11.30.
great night in the end. Its one of the most difficult venues i DJ in as people wander and its proper dark and oppressive.

All that worked was cheese - good job the bride was understanding :)

Not really

If venue are ok with it nothing wrong at all doing it for free. For starters the feeling of having earnt your crust is worth it.

I know its not the DJ's fault but I wouldnt rule out doing that.

Saying that its not happeaned yet ;)

I know the feeling. But isnt it great been able to just chill out. I did a disco night at a pub last night.

Rugby League was on (Leeds vs Wigan) so people were watching that. It was like 10:00pm nearly when the game finished. Alex my roadie was Starving and Sutton Fields were serving meals till 9.00pm. We was setup by 7:00pm
so Alex got hiself a bar meal. It was like 7:45pm by the time. The landlord had an hour off So he said to us do you fancy a round of bowling. He gets a discount at Hull Bowl. So went there as its in the same car park as the pub had a couple of games and it was like 9:30pm. 15 mins till the disco started.

Some people do it for the love and passion of entertaining, not just the money!

I did a recent gig at an award party for a local football team, It was such a good night I couldnt help myself playing on for 45 mins F.O.C

I'll draw my own conclusions.

Its not all about the money sometimes. i charge £400 a gig usually twice a week (much more for an all day). I like to kick back sometimes.

I am Doing two teen boat parties next week for £60 a gig
Its on Mon & Tues and only requires two actives. Its great fun, different and easy! :)

Each case is judged on its merits. Tonights wedding is in a private field in the middle of nowhere. I know many of the guests, and if it overruns, I shall neither moan, nor ask for extra money. It will repay itself many times over.

Other venues, occasions and circumstances, well there's no way on God's earth that it will go over time. No one size fits all.

We did a wedding a few weeks back which was running seriously late by the time we got on. We had less than an hour of the evening left, so when the B&G asked if we could stay on an extra 30 mins. How could we refuse?

It would have felt like we hadn't given them value for money. I know that wasn't our fault, but they had payed us to play for a lot longer than 90 mins

As for the Staff....I don't consider they are my responsibility.Of course I will always liaise with Licencee or the Venue Manager but as far as the barstaff go I feel they are the responsibility of the aforementioned. You may be doing them a favour......overtime in a recession??:) :) :) :)

If you are doing an event and your price has been agreed then cool. If you have Terms & Conditions which state your fees per half hour / hour after the agreed time (and with the venues consent) then that's cool aswell.

If things run late and it's not down to you then what can you do? Sometimes you may want to carry on and give the customer a bit more for their money but it isn't always as easy as that if you have a venue that is strict on timing (a hotel function room with residents above it or a local hall which has a caretaker like hitler).

I have been in situations where I have ended up playing for like 2 hours and there's no way I can play after the agreed time because of the venue guidelines. I agree it's not always about the money. I do a christmas party for a local school that has learning difficulties every year. It's 2 hours and the access is a pain in the proverbial and it's usually on the same day that everyone finishes for work at christmas and it's in the afternoon so I'm on the go all day going from one function to another, but I do it very, very cheap for them. I would do the same price if they wanted me for 3 hours.

Saying that though, and to contradict myself....when it's your only income, it IS about the money.

I do a local handicapped group's Christmas party free every year. I've done it for years now. They are a small charity and have very little funds. It is usually in first week of January, so quiet time anyway.

It's just my way of supporting them, and before anybody says "handicapped" is non-pc, they call themselves that in their name.

What has working for free got to do with feeling like you "have earn't your crust"?

If you are not earning your fee during the time slots you have been booked for then you should be charging less in the first place, not giving it away for free at the end because the clients run over.

If you can afford to give your time away for free on a whim then that is all it's really worth, nothing.

My conclusions are simple.

A number of people say they do discos because they love doing them rather than for the money...and yet they all charge, which I find a bit strange, especially as so many DJs are part time & already have a regular income from their day job.

Show me someone who does all their discos for free, and I'll show you someone who REALLY does it because they love doing it!

Show me someone who can honestly say they've never charged less than their usual rates, played for free or not charged for any extra service/time and I'll show you a businessman. ;)

I do know someone who DJ's regularly and does not charge at all - one of the residents in the Learning Difficulties residential home where my mother is a carer has a nice little system and plays for all their birthdays, Christmas etc.
He really does love it, the pleasure it gives him and his audience is priceless.

If you have put a price in for say a 7.30-12 service and like some times you don't get to set up til 9 and there's a band or food that takes up more time then yes sometimes I feel like they've not had what they paid for. I'm not saying that people who wouldn't play on abit for free are wrong its just my personal preference.

If things are over-running and you can't set up until 9, I think that's irrelevant. The same applies if there's also a band playing.

You've still had to arrive at 6 or 6.30, so you still have to be at the venue, and they're paying you for your time, so I don't see why it should make any difference.

Weddings always run late anyway. If I did extra time whever I started late, I'd be doing extra time at just about every wedding I do, which would add up to an obscene amount of unpaid overtime worked every year. No thanks.

I said I don't see anything wrong with it. I also never said every time it runs a bit late but some do run really late even by wedding standards.
