My friday night.........

got me wondering.

Having DJ'ed publicly for the past 3 and a half years I have never once watched a DJ perform.

Naturally I was on the dancefloor as a punter but half cut and wasnt really taking in what and how the dj was "doing his own thing".

I went to watch Dan off this forum. (Eastwood not Essex btw) and was really interesting seeing how he works. Learnt a few tips for mixing radio edits and also mic work. Also a couple of tracks that I really should have are being downloaded as we speak.

Just wondering about other guys on here? do you/have you watched over djs or are you "stuck in your world" as I was before tonight?

Several times a year when I'm not working, I'll go out in a roadie capacity to help someone I know or someone from the forum with one of their gigs.

Apart from that, when I have a night off, the last thing I want to do is go somewhere where there's a mobile disco. Busman's holiday & all that...

Seen a couple (Dave Dragonfly, Solitaire and others who work for him).....and it's good to watch and get tips.

Just makes you firm up what you are doing and doing it correctly, I see nothing wrong in it. :D

I think I've been to 1 Mobile Disco before at a party for a friend where I was impressed with the equipment and the DJ and his music selections. I would honestly like to see others but it's getting the time. I am always up for seeing how others do it and if there is anything I should be doing.

i think it's useful to learn from what other DJ's do and the reactions they get. Went to party last night and he played a few songs i don't usually play and got good reactions (I just have to remember what they are)

All in all he was a decent DJ and worked the crowd, aside from using the mic too much in my opinion and he was sat down for most of the night which a pet hate of mine.

I think a problem for me is I tend to analyse what they are doing instead of letting go and having a good time which is a bit of shame, but you can't help yourself sometimes.

The venue we do a fair amount of work for has 3 suites so we get to go and meet atleast 2 other dj's during prom season & christmas for example which is really good.
Especially when one of them has a bose drainpipe system & OOVJ! nice to listen to :) Always helpful to speak to other djs and see how they roll

I have seen Darren and Tony work and loved it!

Darren is where I learnt my mic work from and Tony's was just dam right strange! ;) He did teach me some good tunes though, especially Black Legend.

Tone, when you have as much learning to do as you obviously have, I'd advise watching as many as you possibly can. :p :D :D :D :D

Unfortunately every DJ at every adult disco I've been to recently (eight nights in pubs/small clubs and four private parties) has been mediocre at best. Bizarrely I've watched four different kids entertainers at parties with my own kids, and they've all been fantastic.

I've worked with four other DJ's in the last two years (three as a direct result of contact with this forum) and they've all been excellent and I've learnt a load about mic work, mixing and using lighting to create an atmosphere as a result.

I know I still have a lot to learn, so I take the opportunity to work with other DJ's as much as possible - if anyone in the South west needs a roadie for a night (or is prepared to let me know shadow them), I'm definitely up for it :D

When I first started I went out with a couple of local DJ's to see how they were doing things, I also picked a fair amount up by working behind the bar when I was 18 and listening to the resident DJ work, he was really good. So good in fact that he now works for me :)
