I suspect Greene King IPA is at the top of the list because it's cheap, not because it's any good.

GBBF ah yes mainly for smaller independants unlike the national big boy stuff. In which case watchout fro the nethergate breweries from clare in suffolk 10 miles up the road from us. They have several winning brands from the GBBF

Cafferys like guinness and murphys are not classed as ales they are stouts

Being readily available has something to do with it as well. Fosters is the best selling lager in the uk, it's also sold in the most outlets. Think about that & the top selling beers listed above.

Ale
A classification of beer styles, ales are made with top-fermenting yeast. The brewing takes place under warmer conditions than lager. Pale, brown, red, amber, bitter, stout, porter, and lambic are a few examples of the many types of ale.

So there!

Mentioning lager on a beer thread is seriously off topic!

Mentioning lager on a beer thread is seriously off topic! Yes absolutely no place for fizzy stuff in this thread, which brings me to......
Apparantly, I've been reading that cider is trendy again!!!???? :omg: :beer:Fizzy rubbish that you can see through. The only half decent exceptions to the rule being Scrumpy Jack & Magners/Bulmers.
