A question.

Which piece of disco lighting (one item) over the last 40 years has been in your opinion been influential in its time.

My choice Opti Solar 250.

Just for fun.:)

Gotta say, the simple par36 pinspot influential as many effect were based on it, it was probably one of the most used effects (if you can call it an effect) over the earlier years and was used by nearly every disco out there and it still has many uses today.

Recently the Martin EFX500 and Wizards have probably had a huge influence in allowing more minimalistic setups so they get my vote.

I agree, and only hope some of the people who took the :Censored: out of MY pinspots read your post!

I'd say the most iconic (and also timeless) effect has to be the mirrorball.

Naughty i knew someone would say that, not a disco effect been around since the early 1900s.

Not really sure what else was based on what is essentially a hand torch on a bracket; thought the 'pinspot' / 'rainspot' was just a derivation of the original steel ACL / aircraft landing lights which began finding their way onto American stages in the 70's... (28v?), with Thomas coming a little later with the aluminum PAR.

An affectionate nod, though, to the Varilite VL1 and Artisan console.

Errr, those of us djing in the 80s will know plenty.

Helicopters, par36 scanners etc.

I like the Martin Acrobat myself, it's the grandfather of many of todays effects, and still in regular use by many DJs

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgh! They've been past their sell by these past 100 years. :p

Oh yuss. I fondly remember the days when we rigged over thirty foot of the blighters on a stage as a standard rig. Happy days, stuff this minimalistic lark.

Not entirely in the exact spirit of the question, but let's hear it for the Martin Magic Moon/ Abstract Monster Moon. I spent £300 on my Magic Moon!!!!!!     A lot of years ago. That would be a lot of Impossibleds and Revos nowadays. ;) ;)

Martin MAC 250 or Abrstract VR8, both are classics.

IMHO - From the past, the one thing we probably have all had was a Par Can (and still do in LED format), just about everybody had some, DJ's, Bands, Stage etc.

The modern equivalent icon would have to be the star cloth, which in some variety or other, the vast majority of us now have as our frontage or backdrop

Awesome light. I remember seeing one on the waltzers at the fair (mid 80's)
Looked fantastic with smoke ;)

My current favorite in my possession, for old school effect, a similar light effect is known as the mushroom, but I haven't found the correct name for it yet.

I am not a huge fan of strobes, but I sit 4 50w strobes tucked into the bottom of my deck-stand cloth, doesn't sound much, but they really look good when in action with a busy dance floor.
