Durable paint.

I'm thinking of painting my ultimax vertical poles and trusslite. Any recommendations on a good durable paint? Or is getting them professionally powder coated the way forward?

I'm interested in people's opinion and experience on this too, as I'm looking at some aluminium extrusion at this precise moment that is being used on a project we're doing and thinking about painting it with Hammerite.... but would like to know if there are any other options.

Ouch sounds painfull :P

I think either proper hammerite or powder coating would proberley be the best option.

Over the years, I've used various types of paint on everything from surrounds & speakers to T bars.

The trouble is that whichever type you use, when the item gets knocked, it chips off, so if you don't mind repainting every couple of months, go for it.

I think the fact the ultimax poles and truss are zinc plated/glavanised steel (one or both of the two?) makes it a little more complicated than just painting them, don't quote me though as I'm no expert, but did want to do this also. A bit of reading fodder.

I had mine powered coated a year ago , both uprights and the trusslite ( including pins)


these are the pics just after it was done , now the stand is 400mm smaller , so is the trusslite.
my trusslite is pre wired and i dont take it apart , the top castings are always connected to the trusslite , so there are no/very little marks , where the lights hang from I have a few rounds of black tape to add protection.

The uprights are scratched , due to the ultimax aux rail , which is a pain by yourself , but not too bad .

Total cost ( this included 4 scanner bodies ) was £75

I'd suggest a trial run on a small spare piece of the item to be painted. If the paint Steve and Angela are describing is the one I'm thinking of, the Hammerite version is Smoothrite. Straight onto bare metal, smooth gloss finish, and we did a garden swing for the kids with it. It was almost as good a finish when we scrapped it as when we painted it.

Couple of tips.
B&Q probably do an own brand version ( they used to do. A trade name of a similar product is Coovar, but I'm not sure it's available in smooth ). It may be poubds cheaper, it nay be pennies. Have a look, the quality's near identical.

If you're going to give it two coats, put the second one on before the first is fully dry. It contracts as it dries, so a wet coat on a dry coat can lead to cracking. Can. May.

We're using the satin finish for our little project, and it is a smooth finish. The extrusion won't be visible, in the main.

The one that Steve is talking about actually said "straight to galvanised" on the front of the tin.

B&Q only had Hammerite and International brands (oh and one other that was high gloss enamel that we didn't look at too closely because it wasn't what we were after)

I would trust anything with the Hammerite brand on it, it is excellent stuff and you can see why they have that particular market cornered!

I find halfords is cheaper than B&Q for hamerite.
