As im fed up with carrying 2 duplicate sound systems ive finally knocked a back up together THAT YOU CAN LIFT WITH YOUR LITTLE FINGER!!!
this is my Small back-up disco system
STUDIOMASTER C3X With effects mixer
4 XLR mic/line sockets
4 Stereo Line Inputs
and digital effects/
Citronic Basic 2 channel Compressor for Loudspeaker protection and a
Chevin A500 1 unit Switching Power amplifier
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/DAVESOUNDS/DSCF0032-1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/DAVESOUNDS/DSCF0031-1.jpg
its a bit of a cheapie and consists of...
£30 s/h Gator 4 u Shallow case
£100 s/h Studiomaster c3x mixer (1 u) 4 mikes / 4 Lines with dsp effects
£50 new (ebay) Citronic Compressor (for Loudspeaker protection)
£150 s/h Chevin A500 Linear Switching Amplifier.
Im just cabling it at the moment and am considering fitting a Power Distribution bar at the rear
So for around £350 at least i know i can cover
Mixer / Compressor or Amplifier failure.

cheers

Why bother with a compressor/limiter when it's only you using it?

yourdj
04-08-2010, 11:58 PM
why not get active speakers for back up?
Much easier if things go pop mid gig.

I assume its a back up amp i guess.

Cause active speakers are rubbish (my opinion only)
Active speakers are unreliable
theyre virtually impossible to repair
theyre heavier
theyre a mess of line and power cables
theyre difficult to use for outside pa
Theyre much dearer to buy
need i go on???

cheers

Hiya Danno i use a compressor just to look after my rcf / mackie speakers cause parts are
expensive for the Italian ones!
(and i get carried away sometimes too!) i set em to brick wall no compromise limiting as some amps
will kill your speakers just as soon as the red light comes on (allthough the chevins are a lovely soft clip)
ive used Matrix ones which are NOT

hiya Jdb ill get wifey to snap me tomorrow its light honest!
and sounds great!

Active speakers are unreliable
spose so but you have two amps instead of one which must be a benefit

theyre virtually impossible to repair
I had mine fixed loads of times and altered

theyre heavier
My Tapco thumps are under 10kg each - honestly never known cads so light. very powerful too. my girlfriend has no problems lugging them up stairs and she is a wimp :p

theyre a mess of line and power cables
granted

theyre difficult to use for outside pa
granted-although much quicker to set up as i do an active outdoor set every week on sundays and a boat party on weds which does not pay much so active is my choice as its quick - no lights either.
Much simpler for my use.

Theyre much dearer to buy
not if you have to buy speakers and amps, flight cases and mixers IMO - my tapco's cost me £300 and fill most small venues fine

Whats that 1u mixer like - thinking of getting one :)

Active speakers are unreliable

I've use Mackie, EV, RCF and WAudio tops in the last 5 years without a problem.

theyre virtually impossible to repair

Really? So active speakers don't have a separate amp module then?

theyre heavier

In comparison to? How on earth can you make a sweeping statement like that? Most active cabs are plastic, therefore lighter.

theyre a mess of line and power cables

I wouldn't know, but I am sure the R&D departments at the various companies might disagree.

theyre difficult to use for outside pa

Perhaps not as easy as passive, but I wouldn't say difficult.

Theyre much dearer to buy

In comparison to buying a pair of passive cabs and an amp? Are you sure?

?

Err, I think he's referring to running two cables to each cab, ie signal and mains, rather than simply one speaker cable.

I know there are some superb active cabs out there, but the Luddite in me simply can't come to terms with:
Having the amps and volume controls thereof up to fifty feet away.
Running mains cables a long way away from the console.
Running signal cables a long way away from the console.

Illogical maybe, but I can't see my first active ( powered, if you wish to be pedantic ) rig on the horizon just yet.

Ah, I see. So one more cable makes it a 'mess' of cables then does it?

100% increase in cabling running away from the concealment of the deckstand. ;) Messy. :D :D :D :D

DO you adjust the gains on your amp during the evening or do you use your mixer?

Are your speakers not next to you then?

Totally Mr Spock.

I very very very rarely adjust the amps, and yes I use the mixer, but I want to have that facility.

Are your speakers not next to you then?

Sometimes very very close. Sometimes a long long way away.

And?

I always regard signal cables as less robust than speaker cables. I may be wrong, but it's my perception. Therefore, I don't fancy running them long distances.

Totally Mr Spock.

Yes Captain. ;) :D :D :D

I accept that my views may not be based on fact. I'm old. Some of my views may take some changing, even if they're subsequently proved to be wrong.

Cables for powered cabs( not active) can be overcome by using a combined signal power cable all in one sheath readily available.
So that argument is out the window.

There is an argument that you're running your signal cables over a greater length, which is true.... but on the other hand, there is surely greater loss in the cable carrying the powered signal sent from an amp to a passive speaker?

More power loss using long passive cables try to use 2.5mm for longer runs but a sod to get the speakon wired up.
You can get 6 core 3x power 3x signal for a proper job but people tend not to spend money on good cabling as they see it not as a priority,i have just invested over £ 200 on speaker cables for a Alpha Nexo rig but a good investment.

I think it's the first time I've ever seen any of their gear in the gallery.

Couldn't agree more.

I have a BG250 mixer amp mounted in a case with a midi sized mini disc player, and that's been serving me well for the quiz nights for more than a decade now.

All I do is add is a speaker on a tripod & a mic, and I'm in business!

Yes ....he did.

He has also rescued a number of items I have written off.
He is a whizz and a thoroughly nice guy.He has subconsciously taken responsibilty for the maintenance of all my gear....though he doesn't know it yet.For me that is massive.... as it was the one area I was sadly, sadly lacking.

He has a plethora of good quality old and new gear......and knows the equipment side inside out.I have learnt a great deal from my association with him.:) :) :)

If he was honest I think Dave would tell you he wouldn't mind some help with posting and also perhaps a Website....but i'll leave that up to him!!
