Hi not really planned but I have done the first of a mid week residency in The Whitehouse Night Club in Southampton. Only got the gig yesterday

it's owned by a very good DJ so as you can imagine getting there is nie on impossible :p

Just too prove what i have been going on about all these years about club DJ's being big headed idiots with no ability to pull off a wedding here is a mini mix (RECORED LIVE TO 250 PEOPLE) in which i did not practice.

I'm actually very impressed with myself as it was easier thani had ever imagined. Did all sorts not just dance as you see at the end.

4 deck set too which is not my forte as im dyslexic and a bit slow :p

Two of the tracks in this were given to me by two crowd members mid gig so I had never heard them before.

Bit ropy in places but imagine your in a loud nightclub with lots of bass. :muppet:

Im sorry Toby, dont take this the wrong way, but that isnt IMO "Club DJ" standards. Sharp cut-outs, double beating and drastically bad vocal clashes.

I appreciate that you didnt get chance to practice, but a lot of regular club djs, i.e. the ones doing full nights of club work, and not just turning up and playing for an hour, dont practice either.

Fair do's. I thought that was not bad for a newbee though on the fly :D

I did have allot of hastle from a demanding clientele (pain in the bum italians and germans). And i was in the pitch black (honestly you thought they would supply a light - i could not even see the pioneer mixer effects or anything). i had to use the light on my phone too see the settings and my laptop keys.

I will do another one next week ;) armed with a desk light, impossiled, pars & some practice. :)

I'm in the same situation where I have just started a weekly residency in Oxford on a Thursday called WOW! 70s, 80s, 90s (£3 in all night, drinks promos :D LOL)

Converting to a club DJ from mobile puts you right out of your comfort zone I found although given the night I am treating this more like a mobile DJ that you would playing the latest tunes.

You get used to your own way of working and setting up and plugging into a clubs system is dawnting especially when you find.
* Mixer completely shafted, channels not working, headphone cue mix not working, effects not working
* CD Player cue buttons not working
* Monitor Speaker not working so 1/4 second delay from the main PA to work with.

i've heard better mixing TBH, but it's easy to over analyse when listening back and I really do believe that is more about what you play than how you mix it.

Were you using the inhouse system Toby or your own Serato Itch setup into their PA ?

Oh dear Toby, im not sure that I would of posted this up if I were you.

It screams bedroom DJ as far as club mixing is concerned. Im sorry if this sounds harsh but its only my opinion! If I had mixed to your standard in some the places I have worked, I would of been asked to "STEP AWAY FROM THE TURNTABLES"

You also commented about Club DJ's being big headed idiots with no ability to pull off a wedding? Tut Tut... Now if that short mix would of been seamless using loops/acappella's and effects, or just seamless for that matter, I would of taken that comment a little more lightly... Perhaps I'll record a short video of this club DJ doing a wedding this Saturday and make you eat your words :)

Practice Practice Practice, you use a VCI that has a sync button! PLEASE tell me you were using CDJ's and not your VCI at the Whitehouse???

Now I know how you get away with using £15 headphones! :D

Yes a video would be great as I am looking at improving my skills.

If I was recording this as a practiced set in my bedroom it would have been allot better but i did not and it was my first gig after all and I am looking for advice on ways to improve as always. :)

All respect for decent Club DJ's.
I am only talking about the big headed ones i have met in my time. :)

Was this the first time you've ever DJ'd in a nightclub Toby? I was under the impression you'd done plenty "heavy mixing" in nightclubs.

No not like that. I have done allot of gigs in clubs and mixing at other events.
what i said in the headphone post was a p-take but it did not come out that way :)

I would ask people to listen all the way though as the start is not as good as the end.

Thank you

No matter what people say I did a good job and had a packed floor all night which is the most important thing. :) It's a different thing listening to it on a crummy laptop speaker compared too a club system.

It's a mid week student gig so good practice for me and i doubt anyone there would have any idea what they are listening to anyway. :p

Toby,

Your initial post comes across as being very sanctamonious, stating club dj's being big headed idiots with no ability..... A fairly sweeping statement, I think that you will find a fair few people on this forum might have a few strong words in reply to that. It must be the one's that you meet or in your circle, as I have met quite a few in my time, both famous and not so famous, who have in the majority been decent people, not up their own :Censored: .

By you stating that you are now a club dj, does that mean that you are big headed with no ability ? ? I'm sure that you wouldn't go up to Carl Cox and call him a big headed idiot with no ability.

You've stated that the club is owned by a very good dj, by your own description, he must be either a mobile dj, one of those big headed idiots with no ability or one of a very small minority, according to you. Not very good slating a new employer after your first night !

Club DJs still have to play the right music for the crowd and read a crowd as well a mix. Also, why is it nie on impossible, if the owner is a good dj then I'm sure that anyone who initially provided him with a very good audition disc, he would probably give him a chance earlier on in the evening, if they were very good then he would probably give them some more opportunities, talent generally shines through. ;)

Toby...i wasnt listening to it on crummy laptop speakers...i was using a pair of KRK RP6 G2's and im sorry, but when i was running club nights if that had been presented by a possible DJ, they would never have got a slot.

Its not a case of practicing, its a simple case of knowing your music, knowing mix points, vocal entry and exits etc. I know many top DJs who to this day dont actually practice the mix becase they know they can mix. They repeatedly listen to new stuff, rearrange theyr sets around key mix points and harmonies and generally do alot of prepwork...which isnt exactly practicing to beatmix.

I will congratulate you on having a packed dancefloor, but the thing is...nightclubs have a captive audience to some extent ;)

Ok, I was ready to have a right laugh and was rubbing my hands prior to listening and after reading some of the comments.

But - you know, ok the tunes are pretty old hat (but we don't know what the night is promoted as), but on the whole I think people have been a little too harsh simply because it's Toby, because actually, in reality (after the first mix) it wasn't all that bad to be honest - ok it was basic stuff but it wasn't that terrible we have to burn effigys of the lad.

I can't see the problem with offering a little encouragement rather than just slating him.

Yes they are international students and much of the set is classic international music with chart. a range of macarena type stuff, waka waka sort of thing & house music so some of the classics go down very well.

You know me Mark, I probably the last person to do 'holier than thou' mate, I just didn't think it warranted some of the comments TBH.

Given the lack of technical ability in the mix It probably was brave/foolhardy to put it up, however, he did say it was ropey in some places.

If I was Toby, I wouldn't have said 'I'm a Nightclub DJ now' because clearly there's a lot of work/practising to do, but I'll stand with what I originally said in the fact it's not that bad, I've heard worse

Watching a video of me performing wont improve your skills Toby :)

I mentioned I would post a video in response to your sweeping statement about Club DJ's being big heads and not able to entertain at Weddings. Carl Cox started his career doing mobile gigs, and just look where he is now (I'm not saying your dj will be the next Carl Cox!!)

You dont need ability to mix in Clubs nowadays, Serato, Traktor and numerous controllers DO IT FOR YOU (I personally hate the SYNC button) All you need to be capable of is programming a night/set - and know your tracks for breaks/mix points etc.

Its far more advanced than just beatmixing now in the clubs - Live remixing, loops, effects and accapella's is where its at!

I have seen you use the Vestax VCI, which is a perfect solution to learning all of the above...

Finally, this post stated "Now I'm a club DJ!" or something along those lines. When you cant even perfect the art of seamless beatmatching (either manually or using a controller/software) I am sorry to say you are far from being a Club DJ - Stick to the Weddings :)

When I next see a mutual DJ friend, I will post a 10 min mix up using his VCI, loops and effects that will show you how its really done :p

With Serato Itch the sync facility is to get the BPM the same in both decks, but that's all it does (The sync button on the vestax, NS7 etc), Serato doesn't automix or lock the tracks together in sync, it just provides a visual reference with the waveforms (which are better then traktors :( )

Indeed. one of the main reasons i went for Serato was the lack of auto mix/sync at the request of an area manager.

Not sure about your software but Numark Cue the sync isnt that great either.

Plus its more than just matching up beats anyways, if you got two 4/4 and ones hitting the fourth as the other is hitting the second its gonna sound odd anyways.

Ive used it when punters talk to me and Ive just not got the time to get it all set myself.

Serato has no such function in any way shape or form. the closest you get is a beat counter thats right upto 1 decimal place. :)

Same here.

Would be handy to have an automix facility for background though. Itunes suffices for that with 8 sec. DJAY too has a great automix playlist thing aswell.

what do you think of the mic latency - awful or what. almost an afterthought when developing it i think.

I definitely wouldnt have posted that up. Pretty awful mixing - if i was the club owner id be looking for someone else!!! ;)

But dont give up - practise practise practise. As a few have said, learn where the vocal points ,break points etc are on tracks before mixing them in.
Mixing in tracks that you havent played before is always going to come back and bite you on the buttocks!Trust me, ive done it myself.
Mixing isnt hard to do, knowing your music is the key.

If you do have to play an unknown track then simply - dont mix it. The audience will still appreciate it.

Only just caught up with this thread, and I totally agree with the above comments.

Toby didn't do himself any favours with a couple of the things he said in the OP, and I guess that's part of the reason why he's getting a hard time, but comments suggesting it's so bad that he shouldn't have posted it & that it's "pretty awful" are unfair IMO.

Maybe those who work in clubs & have slated Toby should post up some of THEIR mixes if they think they are so good & that he could learn so much from them!

I've only just listened to the mix and I agree, it wasn't that bad to my ears, but then this may be an age thing...I listened to some of the guys mixing tech house at BPM last year and just thought it was noises. No passion involved.

I think Toby built himself up too much and that is why he is being shot down.

Apologies if you feel I have given you a hard time, and if your first post was tongue in cheek, perhaps I have been a little harsh.

I have heard worse in all fairness.

I'd happily post up mixes etc, but from being a lurker (and seeing posts relating to posting mixes) more than a poster I think the copyright brigade wouldnt allow it...

Perhaps we could have a sub forum (mods?) - After all mixes are for PROMOTIONAL USE only and Im not sure how this sits with copyright infringement (continuous mixes etc) Souncloud wouldnt exist if there were major issues :)

Just stick it on youtube and they sort out the copy right.

The video i did somehow had an itunes pop up on it for the second track.

Clever. :) Its not on there now for some reason?

having said that a promo/demo section would be good as mobile djing is now coming out of the dark ages and cleints are wanting more from thier mobile disco's and before too long will expect mixing of some sort as the norm

Agreed.

I see no reason why wedding clients would suddenly expect mixing from their DJ.

The truth is they don't care.

Toby,

If my posts about your OP offended you, I apologise, but they were a bit arrogant and obnoxious and really got up my goat. As you have said your comments were made tongue in cheek, but they didn't initially come over, like that.

I never even commented about your mix, which wasn't too bad, as you had not heard a couple of the tracks. ;)

I beatmix at least part of the night at almost every event, and consider it an important part of the way I DJ. That said, I completely disagree with your statement. I can only recall being asked twice if the DJ would be able to beatmix the songs. Both times were for teen events. On the flipside, I've had many clients comment on how well the songs flowed into each other. They probably didn't realise what was involved in the process but it has been commented on by clients.

Overall, the average client and punters couldn't care less about mixing as long as everyone has a great time.

I agree - the failure of the written word. Having alan partridge stuck on my picture thing does not help either :p

The last 3 weddings i have done ive been asked to do a "little dance mix set".

So id say it depends on your audience. Definitely not all night!

Probably the same reason I love not having to talk on the mic in club nights :p

I can't see why a DJ wouldn't want to use mixing as part of any set at any event. It's not essential but it does help keep people on the dance floor, or perhaps we should go back to the days of let the track play to the end, then sau=y "that was The Beatles with I Saw Her Standing There and this is The Troggs and Wild Thing"!

Because it's not necessary, and you are no more likely to keep people on the dance floor if you're mixing than if you're not...particularly at a wedding reception.

Not at all.

Letting one song end, back announcing it & announcing the next song is something very different to simply not mixing. How can you even compare the two?

It's just a fact, I just dont beatmix for 90 percent of mobile gigs. I will chop/blend, but not beatmix... most of the time It would go unappreciated. As long as you flow between genres and keep the floor thats all that counts IMO

I think we've had this debate before, about whether a mobile DJ should be able to beat mix, and my opinion is still the same - yes they should be able to.

When people talk about beat mixing, they tend to mean house and club tunes - where the beats of the two tracks are mixed seamlessly together over 16/32/64/128 beats. If that is what people are talking about in this thread, then I would agree with most, and say there isn't much call for it in most mobile situations.

You can beat mix songs over much shorter segments however, even just or 4 or 8 beats, creating a nice flow from one track to another, and there's no doubt this helps to keep dancers on the floor in my experience. One example of the top of my head is the 'Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing' -> 'Four Seasons - December 63' mix, which I use quite often as it is so effective.

The other thing to bear in mind is that you can beat mix tracks without actually overlapping the them, but cutting between the two, in such a way that the beat is a continuous tempo.

There are DJ's that work week in week out that have a go at train wreck mixing. It's inexcusable to not know "how to" if its your profession. Its a skill that takes time to aquire, but once you have "DJ ear" its with you for life

To quote the above, its exactly what I do durng mobile work - Simple :beer1:

I don't mix all night, but there are certain points and tunes that go well together and I am talking about the poppy stuff, not necessarily dance tunes.

It's not necessary, but helps with the flow of the dance floor and is another string to your bow and goes towards making you better than the next man IMO.

No Toby, The 30 min mix I did last night was full on beat mixing using 12" versions of the following tracks (in order from memory)

Yolanda ft DCUP - We no Speak Americano
Robin S - Show me Love
Living Joy - Dreamer
Mousse T - Horny
The Original - I Luv U Baby
Strike - U Sure Do
Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam
Example - Kickstart

Then proceeded to blend/chop

I also agree with Darren (Solitaire)

Your playlist is very stop start, no flow to it really... Did you find you lost the floor at times? The only three track I would play in your order above would be

Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire
The Killers - Mr Brightside
Bryan Adams - Summer of 69

Then you went into Robin S???? Why not Guns and Roses like you played a few tracks later?? Then Bon Jovi perhaps? Keep it flowing :)

Now If Im booked for an 18th/21st and any pre confirmed playlists are "clubby" - I would want to show off a little :p

This is what I use to mix little groups of tunes together as they are mostly radio edits of songs and I think it enhances the continuity on the dance floor.

It's inexcusable to not know "how to" if its your profession. :beer1:

Absolute twaddle, I was DJing long before mixing was even invented, only on one occasion has my inability to mix been questioned, and that was where I stepped in last minute to bail out a mate (who also doesn't mix) and I was told by a "clubhead" that I wasn't a real DJ as I wasn't mixing it up on the SP25s!! This is another of those "DJ things" where the punters couldn't give a toss as long as they have a good time! Incidentally six of this month's bookings are referrals from previous clients, so it doesn't appear to be holding me back any!

Thats your opinion - If your DJ'ing week in week out (and have been for decades by the sounds of it) and cant pick up (or be bothered to learn) basic beatmatching skills, then I personally feel its wrong.. YOU should be able to beatmix with your amount of experience.

Im not saying punters are always listening out for mixing - In fact Im saying the opposite as far as OUR line of work is concerned.

I can recommend a good read by Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster should you be interested :D

It contains alot of information from setting up bedroom djing equipment to how to deal with contracts for gigs aboard.

Beatmixing is something you need to practice alot really because your trying to "re wire how your brain and hearing works"

Of course its my opinion! Would you expect me to post someone else's? I don't care if you think its wrong, I think you're wrong, and if you listen to the mix at the beginning of this topic, you will see exactly why. I will accept that mixing done well sounds quite clever, done badly, its just awful - why should I need to beatmix? No-one has ever asked me to, my feedback, re-bookings ,the fact that I am recommended by most of the best venues locally and that I am still increasing my bookings year on year tell me that what I am doing is right. I do the odd chop, where I need to and tbh don't have a problem retaining my dance floor because I play the right songs in an order that flows. I've seen so many Johnny come lately's that insist on beat matching songs, actually to the detriment of the dance floor, just because something has the same bpm, doesn't automatically mean that two songs fit together. You do what you want, and I'll just carry on in my own sweet way being successful, what was it the young lady behind the bar said to me last night...oh yes, "You are a brilliant DJ, you didn't pick a bad song all night, and the audience loved it. How do you keep them dancing all the time?"
Now I would never describe myself in such a way, but I do know what works - and if I'm "getting away with it" then long may it continue. Oh as an after thought, if you speak to people of a certain age, they will tell you that they actually hate songs being mixed, wiki, wiki, and scratching.....why? coz that isn't the way music should be.

We are from a different Generation of DJ's, no decent mixing sounds wiki wiki to me?? And what way should music be??? You have completely lost me with your last comment there

You are obviously doing something right, but it wouldnt hurt for you to give "beatmixing" a go though... As Harry Hill would say ...
"There's only one way to find out ... FIGHT"!
I've got be honest and say I knew my post would escalate the debate - if I hadn't someone else would.
I think the truth is, if a DJ cares enough about his craft to be on this forum, he probably knows how to work a room and provide a good service. We are all different, we all want the same thing.
As Ringo would say ...
"Peace & Love ... Peace & Love"

I consider these to be two different things.

Beatmatching means music flows, the tracks are similar and there is no sudden jump from slow to rapid beat.

Beatmixing involves overlay/looping etc. Fine for club, dance but not average party styles.

All competent DJs should be beatmatching but not necessarily beatmixing.

I wouldn't play no woman no cry at a wedding unless specifically asked for, I'd play '3 Little Birds' (which is actually he correct title of what he's got down as 'Everything's Gonna Be Alright) ;)

Thing is Pete, it looks good like that, but you've not taken into account the fact that a lot of them are probably requests & as such the DJ has no control on when they get asked for. While I wouldn't Play the tracks in the order Toby did (which appears to be the order that they were asked for), I would work in similar tracks around the ones I'd been asked for.

For example, this lot

Summer of 69 Bryan Adams
Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer
Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
Sex On Fire Kings Of Leon
The Killers - Mr. Brightside

Would often get played together & while one is playing others mentioned above are often asked for (as we all know people often ask for similar stuff to what's playing). Looks to me that something else was cued up & rather than change the next track (for whatever reason) or waiting a while & doing another mini set in the same vein, he's just played the track that was lined up (possibly for a genre change) & rather than stick with that genre for a few & then go back, he's immediately gone back to what was working when it was asked for

Agreed the DJ has no control over what or when requests are made, however, sometimes it is necessary to be strong enough to delay the odd request until it is more appropriate, I'm always happy to take requests, but not to play them to the detriment of my dance floor.

Thanks for your feedback guys :)

As you may have guessed I have opened myself up with this post and have not put my self on the chopping board by mistake ;)

The reason being I am on this forum to learn and many of you have over 20 years experience whereas i only have about five so I have lots to learn and enjoy every minute of being told I am rubbish ;).

I am doing 2-3 weddings a week at the moment and all the ones this year have been a dancefloor success so I think I am definitely doing something right :) I know people say a bad workman blames his tools but thats rubbish - Getting the Vestax and AKG mics has been key.

The event listed was a marquee gig with 150 people and the dance floor was rammed all night. 30% of those tracks were requests.

I agree with the running order, but That is the way i have learned and with some tweaking is definitely in order so it can "flow" better no doubt.

I have a belief that as long as the track is a popular one people will enjoy it. I also go up and down by BPM only and use allot of looping as mentioned to introduce the new track which seems to work very well so almost all tracks are mixed to a certain extent.

Some just are not and just banged straight in there which also cuts up the set a bit (ie sex on fire is a good one). Or going from a slower bpm one straight into summer of 69 (great start!).

Here is the gig - no cheesy video i am afraid ;)

Toby, Was the mix done on CDJ's or on Serato with your Vestax Controller?

Both. :) I am going to try and do a video of it this week.

Btw -did you swap the Youtube video out? I've just finally got round to listening to the video in the OP, and it doesn't seem to bear a lot of relation to the comments in the thread ;)
