Just to report having done a Marquee gig last night with the Generator supplied by the Caterering Firm all went well. :teeth:

To pick up on Rices previous post I made enquiries before the gig and was satisfied that they guy supplying the Jenny was a proper businessman--not the local Hire Shop or Builder!

I invested in a couple of surge protected plug boards though!

As it happens this was a corporate gig and pricing was not the most important factor--quality and reliability were the issues and as a result the client got what they paid for in terms of a very professional caterer who was using what seemed to me to be a large reliable Generator capable of giving plenty of power for all the various things happening--including my mains power.

Like me the Caterer cant afford any ...... ups otherwise we dont get paid.

During the evening I think there was one very very small flicker--otherwise just like mains power, so I think GENERALLY you get what you pay for--beware customers cheapskating on these things which could end up frying your equipment

Talking of that I finally phoned Musicguard and they confirmed I am NOT covered for power surge damage as suggested recently. they did say very helpfully--you can sue the owner of the generator

So the moral of this story is--check out what generator you are being asked to use, who is supplying it etc power is adequate and use surge protection--
and RCD---I dont think you can do much else--unless someone else has any suggestions?

Glad it went well. My last generator encounter didn't go quite so well, decided to cut out every 15 minutes or so, even without a load on it. Ran 85 metres of three phase cable for nothing!
